A story i guess all of you hands have...but since i am new at the recreation game, what do you do about a flat on the tailer, can you use a regular jack, and where is the jack point on a trailer..we have a 21 ft 2003 sea pro ..signed never had this happen before

my choice is a bottle jack. A scissor jack is ok too, and they don't need as much room...

Anyplace on the frame can be used to lift, but obviously, you want to be close to the tire itself..

You can also lift from the axle, which will take less actual lifting-- when lifting the frame, you must also lift the tire & axle until the spring is unsprung. If you lift from the axle, you're "directly" lifting.

However, you must be more careful lifting from the axle, there's more tendency for the trailer to move, so be sure to block all other wheels good (no matter HOW you're jacking)

Actually answered a question I had too. Thanks. Haven't had to do it, and since we're going to keep the boat at the marina less chances of flats than trailering all the time, but it would be our luck that those two times a year... LOL

With a flat you may not be able to get a jack under the axle and the jack may not have enough travel to lift the frame high enough to get the spare on without using wood blocks. Standard car jacks won't be strong enough to lift the weight of the boat so you will need something more substantial.

My advice is to deflate a tire and then see what jack works and what you may need in the way of additional wood blocks to jack up the trailer enough to get the spare on.

Get a good bottle jack. I have one rated for 8,000 pounds and will lift my boat and trailer without issue. Will even use it for my tow vehicle if needed.

I've never had it happen yet, but I always throw a couple of short 2x4's and a short 4x4 in the back of the truck in case my jack needs a boost, I have to place the jack on soft ground, etc.

You can also use short pieces of 2x4 or 4x4 to run the wheel up on them to get the axle higher off the ground. That gives you a little more clearance for the jack.

Works with single axle or tandem axle trailers. thumb

Anyone ever try one of the "roll-on" jacks for trailers? I have a friend who swears by them. I've just used a mini-floor jack and placed it under where the leaf springs are bolted together.

Since most of the shoulders on the roads I tow on are very uneven dirt, I opted to add the boat and trailer to the wifes AAA coverage. It's only 20some dollars a year and it has now become their issue.

HalfScoop,

I have wondered about those as well. Anyone here ever use one?

I bought trailer assist, anyone had to use that from Boat US? Even if it's great though, it's probably a good idea to have what you need to do it yourself just in case.

I have it too. I can change a flat trailer tire in about 5-10 minutes. If I get a flat, I just change it myself rather than wait for someone to show up and help me. I have the trailer assist insurance for situations more catastrophic than a flat tire.

That's just the way that guy hauls his boat around. The trailer is for his other stuff. wink

I've got trailer assist as well, but for a flat tire I would at least attempt to take care of it myself, and keep the tools on board to do the job. You just never know where a flat might happen, under what road, traffic & weather conditions, etc., so to me the insurance is for peace of mind.
