I'm officially ready for Spring. I stopped by a Golfsmith today, I was driving by and couldn't resist. I hit a few drivers, I've got to hit a driving range in the next couple of weeks, it was fun just hitting into the nets.
I didn't buy a driver, I'm too cheap to spend that kind of money. I did try out a chipper, a club I've been considering. I tried a Cleveland, Odyssey and the house brand Zeno. I thought the Cleveland and the Odyssey were awfully darn similar, and priced north of 100.00 each. I loved the Zeno, even after hitting the other two again, and it only cost 20.00. I sprung for that, and now I'm ready for some short game! I know many people consider a chipper like cheating, but my wedge game is terrible and I really just want to have fun. I don't really have the desire to spend the time to get good at what is just a pastime. I want to play and have fun!

I don't really have the desire to spend the time to get good at what is just a pastime. I want to play and have fun! Straight from the USGA website: Rule 4-1
Chippers
Q. Do chippers conform to the Rules of Golf?
A. Yes, chippers are iron clubs not putters, and therefore must conform with the requirements for woods and irons. For example, chippers may not have a putter grip, two striking faces or appendages for aiming purposes. Additionally, the USGA considers the long chipper to be not traditional and customary in form and make. Essentially, an otherwise conforming chipper must be approximately the same length as a club of similar loft in the player's bag. (Decision 4-1/3 and Rules 1 through 5 in Appendix II) I can't see the grip of the Zevo chipper online but the head looks fine (one hitting face) and as long as the shaft is normal length for the club loft and the grip is round and not shaped like many putters' grips you are good to go. Pull out the chipper with pride! I'm pretty confident my Dad still uses one as well. He plays a lot, has for many years, and is pretty much a stickler for the rules. You also just have to make sure it doesn't put you over the 14 club bag limit. If anybody gives you guff tell 'em if they don't want you to play with a legal modern club they need to ditch their oversize driver and cavity backed irons. They can toss their graphite shafts while they are at it...heck their steel ones too! We can all play with wooden shafts and whack a leather pouch full of feathers. Have fun.
