Ok guys, needs some advice on this one. I just got my tractor back from service, it's running great. However, it's stinking up my garage! The whole garage smells like gas. It's not overwhelming, but it is definitely present. I can't find any kind of a leak, I supposed it could be coming from the vent in the gas cap, it smells strongest there... Would be be safe to cover that vent while the tractor isn't being used?

Any ideas of what else to look for...

In a related story, it's also stretching my garage to the limit, and I'd really like to store it outside for the winter. Any tips on how do to that? I wish I had a shed or something, but I don't. Best I can do is under the deck, and some blue plastic tarps. Safe to assume it's going to rot away like that? Any ideas?

Thanks!

If it's venting fumes that badly I'd start by getting it out of the garage! When I was a kid we had a family down the street whose house blew up because of gasoline fumes in the garage. All 4 were nearly killed with the parents in ICU for over a month. The wood garage doors landed half a block away. I've played that stuff carefully ever since.

Drain the tank and run the carb out of fuel.
It will do fine under a tarp but bring the battery in for the winter.

I like SD's idea of draining the gas and storing inside. If you do store outside under a tarp, check often for mice. They can do a lot of damage in a hurry.

It's a John Deere garden tractor, 1995. Yeah, I pulled it out of the garage this morning. It'll sit outside fine until I have time to drain the tank and try that. Really annoying...

Quick update. Spent some more time looking, found a gas leak coming off the carb. All wet, small puddle of gas on the tractor. Adjusted the clamp and ran it for 15 - 20 minutes, no further weeping. Still, put it outside, where it will stay for a few days to air out, then we'll see if it still smells. Turned off the gas, see if that helps a bit too.

Thx!

Open a window in the garage as well and keep the garage doors open as much as possible to air everything out.

No windows, but we left the garage door open all day, plus I used some of that absorbant kitty litter like stuff to clean up the gas. Wife reports that the aroma is almost completely gone...

Is a leaky '95 model JD garden tractor really worth the risk of being in your garage? Drain it, run it dry, pull the battery and hide it under the deck.

I agree with the advice of running the carb dry. You do not want any 10% ethanol gas left in the bowl for a few months. All my carbureted engines are run dry for storage and work great when I take them out of storage.

I park mine outside year round. I cover it with a tractor cover. Lowes sells nice ones. The underside of mine is great. There's some rust on areas where the paint has worn off on the top side, but that would happen regardless.

Good points all. I took the mower deck off and put it under the deck. Still need to finish draining gas. Might need to get a decent tractor cover, but right now it's wrapped in old school blue tarps...
