My fuel manager said I needed 22 gallons to fill my tank. I could only fit 18.5. I had recently re-calibrated the fuel manager, so its reading is somewhat suspect, but we have had rain almost every day since I parked the boat 3 weeks ago and now I'm concerned. Is there any way to test if I somehow got 3.5 gallons of water in my tank, or if I have suffered from phase separation? I use gas that's 10% ethanol.

It's pretty hard to get access to the bottom of the tank,(where the water is), when the tank is full but if you can get a hose in there to the bottom and syphen some into a jar and let it sit for half an hour you can see if it separates.

Might be a good idea to add a Racor water separating fuel filter ahead of the engine. They were not completely necesary before the E-10 but I feel they are now. Get the one with a clear bowl and 10 microm filter and you will sleep better at night.

Coincidently, my neighbor showed up late last night with a Regal 2150. I haven't talked to him yet to get all the particulars but it looked pretty nice.

If there was 3.5 gallons of water in the tank, the engine would not run, as it would ingest mostly water, not gas.

Thanks for the replies. I'll run for a long time on muffs tomorrow morning and then inspect the fuel filter I have.

Aren't there additives you could add to correct any issues?

Clear bowl (plastic) is a no-no with inboards...only OK for outboards....inboards you need the metal one with the drain on it....
There are test kits where you can test the fuel for water...I just take off the fuel filter at the end of each season....dump the gas into a glass jar and let it sit...so far no water even tho we have had E10 for a long time now....about the original question....gas gauges in boats are notoriously inaccurate anyway so unless you have opertional difficulties I wouldn't worry about it....if you had phase seperation for sure you would know something was wrong....

BTW, Sierra sells a 10 mircon fuel filter that's a lot cheaper than the Racor and works fine...doesn't hold as much water but I've had good luck with them....I did actually get a Racor with the metal bowl....I'd try it next year....but for the money the Sierra 10 micron ones are great.

I personally use Redline Water Remover and Antifreeze at 1 oz per 20 gallons everytime I fill up !

Most of those additives to remove water are just ethanol and you already have plenty of that.

The 2150 is an '02.

My worries were unfounded. Boat ran perfectly all day. We'll be sleeping aboard tonight.

Glad it worked out. Still not a bad idea to have the extra water separating filter. The ethanol can dislodge a lot of junk from the tank/system.

I don't plan to add another filter unless it proves necessary. Two reasons: I've run several hundred gallons of E10 through the boat in the last 3 years; if there was any gunk to dislodge, it has likely been dislodged already. My boat/engine setup does not self-prime the fuel filter so I have to put a fuel filled filter in place and the thought of doing that twice does not appeal to me.

For the past few years, every drop of fuel that our boat has burned has been treated with FP60 as a "just in case".... FP60
