I've owned a Ford F150 that was very reliable. My wife is looking at a Ford Escape with the V6. Dealer says it's reliable but what does the real world say? Also how effective is the 4wd? I don't care for the 4wd in that you can't turn it on or off but the truck looks for wheel slipage and engages it automatically. This seems to be the way SUV's are going though since I see more and more of them removing the manual option. I was surprised on how much room the Escape had inside for being on the smaller SUV side.

I know 3 people who own, and like them. DIL is on her second one, she says "good car". SIL has one, says same. Best I got ...

I thought the Escape is a rebadged Mazda Tribute -- IDK??

4WD is kind of a Bold statement for this. IMO it is more of a AWD unit that allows for better traction in sever weather conditions. If you look underneath the rear of this vehicle the drive unit for the rear is pretty small. It isn't designed to go 4 wheelin. Its main purpose is to allow for additional traction in a highway condition rather than running down the back trails. With all that said I know a few poeple that have or have had them and were very happy with the vehicle.

As a long time 4-wheeler, I was a bit disappointed that my 98 Explorer did not have the manual select option for the 4WD/AWD. After driving it now for 11 years, I wouldn't have it any other way. I don't know if my AWD system is identical to the one in the new Escape, but I would bet it is very similar.

The computer in my truck constantly monitors wheel slip (30 times a second or so). When it detects wheel slip, it transfers the power equally to all 4 wheels. To me, the advantage to that kind of system is that if I'm driving on roads that are "pretty clear" and come across some icy stretches the computer can identify those and react much faster than I can. You don't feel it kick in our out, but you sure can tell it's there by the way the truck handles.

While the system is not designed for "off roading", I've had my Exploder in some pretty hairy places and it has held up well.

The Mazda Tribute is a rebadged Escape. It is a Ford design, using a modified Mazda car chassis,

The Adm's CRV has this type "AWD", and I think for a woman (who probably doesn't want to mess with shifting in/out of 4WD) it's great technology. We have snowy winters here, and she just seamlessly goes about her travels. She loves it. I'm pretty certain that she doesn't even know she has on-demand AWD.

One of my good friends is a service writer at a Ford dealership & he drives a Escape - loves it - his is a 2004 with 80k on it & it has been very good. Way bigger inside than it looks from the outside. They redid them for 2008 & they are much nicer than the older ones. Improvements include going to a 6 speed auto trans & the horsepower went from 200 to 240.

They are big on the inside. I was shocked when I learned they are in the same class as the Toyota Rav4.

I usually either really like, or really hate Ford cars.

The Escape is one of them that I really like. They are a very convenient size and ride and handle pretty good.

One thing about them I don't like - the OEM continental tires are absolute junk after about 15,000 miles. Just plan on getting a good set of tires after that.

I've actually driven one on some pretty rough roads in the mountains near Tucson - not really 4wd trails, but very washboard dirt and gravel roads - pretty steep on places. The only problem I had was that I think I boiled the oil in the OEM shocks - it did pretty good for a while then became a bounce wagon - I thought I broke something, but after we let it cool down a bit, it did fine again.

One of my oldest friends, a die-hard GM guy, married a girl with a Ford Escape. In fact, her whole family owns about a half-dozen of the blinkin' things, and no two are the same color. My buddy, Dennis, comes from a LONG line, like 3 or 4 generations, of Buick- and Chevy-driving people, and he loves his wife's Escape. On his recommendation and the amazing work of art that is the recent generation of Mustangs, I looked hard at Fords when we were shopping for CJSA's new ride. She didn't like the looks of the Expedition, though.

Anyway, I know nearly 10 people with Escapes of different levels of trim and powertrain and all of them love the little SUVs.

I'd go for the Mariner, same vehicle but they only sell a handful a year and you won't see another one like yours, just me I guess.
With the unswitchable 4WD, does it come in pretty smooth? Our Expy when set on Auto4WD will thump when it engages. Pretty annoying and sounds like it doesn't do any good to the mechanicals either.

The 4wd is actually AWD, all Escapes are FWD, with the AWD engaging the rear differential when slip is detected. It is seamless.

Boatless for now...

WM, even on my old Exploder, I can't feel it when it switches in and out of AWD.

To say I like the way the system works would be a major understatement!

Well K9, you got something rarely seen here - a unanimous decision. Better take the Adm shopping.
