Memphis is a great town. My oldest went to school in Jackson TN (an hour away) and her first job was even closer to Memphis. I've never spent much time there but all I hear is it's a fun town. Lots of country and blues places. I know they get some fierce thunderstoms up that way, been in a few of them. Tornados too, my kids school was devasted twice in like 5 yrs. There is a lot of poor people there and in the surrounding country, my daughter used to work with troubled youths up there and she always talked about how poor the area was. This was in 02-03 so maybe it's changed some. Never boated up there but boating in the south is all the same pretty much. More water then you can explore usually, more trees then you can count and it's going to be hot and humid from april to october.

About a year ago, I was at a customer's who had recently moved here from memphis. I was asking her about the area. She went on and on about the town. Seemed like a neat place. She got all done and said, "oh yeah, there is all the Elvis crap, too."

Captkevin, unless there are two, Percy Priest Lake is at Nashville.
I bought my boat from a guy that lived in Collierville, a suburb of Memphis, that boated on Pickwick Lake on the Tennessee River at the TN-MS line east of Memphis. He had a weekend condo at a development at the mouth of the TN-Tom. There is a state park and several marinas.
As a TN resident and traveling salesmen, I can tell you Memphis is a bit of a drive to decent waters. CaptKevin mentioned Percy Priest Lake, it is actually in the Nashville area (3+ hours from Memphis) You can get to south end of Kentucky Lake (middle TN)2 hour drive or Tennesseee River/Pickwick Lake (1 hr+). I know some boaters in Memphis who leave their boat at Lake of the Ozarks in Arkansas (believe 2.5 hour drive, but they say it is worth the drive and they have four little ones). If you make a move toward Memphis seems there has been a big push toward Collierville, TN or North Mississippi area for better schools and better neighborhoods. Hope this helps.
