Here is an O/B powered Trihull that belongs to a friend. She is about a 15' older fiberglass boat that has been painted and re-powered. The rig was powered by a 65 Hp Merc when she came into the family.

Now they have replaced the Merc 65 Hp with a newer 50 Hp Honda. I do not know the real speed numbers, but she is faster with the Honda than the Merc, even with the sizable Hp rating drop. Why? Think back to how Hp is rated now as compared to in the past. Today’s engine is rated at the prop, while the old engine was rated at the flywheel. Add to that rating difference the age and hours on the older engine, prop condition and sizing, and it makes sense.

This is a roomy boat. A huge portable ice chest is tied down behind the seats that functions as the “carry everything”, always-dry, storage bin. Seating is also generous, we popped a full tank of fuel, a full storage locker, and three large men and the female helmsperson ( she is the boat owner) up on plane quickly and cruised at a nice pace on the St. Lawrence River/Seaway without any strain on the engine. Small chop was cut-thru/dealt-with well, but modest boat wakes required a course adjustment, and larger wakes took us off plane, shipped a little water aboard, and called for a specific heading to best deal with them. All of this is in line with a SUV style boat.

By the way, the boat's owner has several boats and this one is the utility work horse in her stable.

The Tri-Hull design is the forbearer to many of today's deckboats.

YOu sure are right about the differences in the rating of outboards. about 15 years ago a freind gave me an old 17' Bayliner that was rated ffor 90 hp. Since the old Force 85 on it had a hole in a piston, I put a new Evinrude 88 on it. That boat was scary fast and almost uncontrolable.

I would guess that it is a Larson, since their 18' models had that same windshield/deck line.

Another possibility would be a Thunderbird boat, since the mounting pad for the bow light is of a similar design as some of their other models. But the windshield isn't similar.

Whatever it is, it looks to be in great shape!

Any more pictures to share???

There were actually quite a few older tri-hulls on boattrader, the closest to the design of the above I could find was this '74 Manatee:

VERY close!

Yeah, the market was flooded with 15 to 18 foot tri-hulls back then. Seascape, Enterprise, Delta, Californian, etc...

Heck, even Montgomery Wards offered one under the Sea King brand.

I should know, I had one! A 1972 model. It was built by Silverline and badged as a Sea King for Wards. It was powered by a Wards Sea King 55 hp o/b. Yep, a rebadged Chrysler/West Bend motor, which of course, later became Force and then Mercury.

One thing's for sure... That motor never let me down. I purchased it used in '79 for $900 and sold it in '83 for $2,000 and it was still running strong. It had just under 1100 hours when I sold it.

There sure were many boat brands making this style of boat awhile ago, though.

Nice boat!

I don't recall ever seeing an MFG dealer here in NorCal, or seeing them at any of the shows back in the 70's and 80's.

I do see an occassional one on the water though.

I have always admired them from afar...

I grew up in an MFG. My dad bought it in the early 70's, and my first boating memories are of this boat. When I was a teenager, he replaced it with a Boston Whaler he stripped down and rebuilt. He still has the Whaler.

This isn't our boat, but this is the model, color, etc. We had a 70hp SeaHorse on it, as I recall.

Sweet!

For me, part of their appeal was the lapstrake hull design in both the v-hull and tri-hull models.

I always admired that!

Thanks for the scoop on fiberglassics.com. It's a great site!

I've spent way too much time there going over the "oldies but goodies"! (MFG included)

I've actually sent them some pics and info on some of the brands listed there.

We had a M-T dealer around the corner from us where I grew up. I used to ride my bike over there and drool over them.

Crooks Boats in Castro Valley was the place.

Their tri hull model was similar to Cobalt's tri hull model of the day.

Cool boats!
