Beautiful too!!

http://www.apple.com/macbook/

Tons of information on the site. The computer starts as a block of aluminum and is machined out. LED displays, new graphics systems are industry leaders. 5 hours battery life. .95" thick. IMPRESSIVE!

An interesting side note to this new product release was the bogus rumor that these would be priced at $800. Seems that a lot of people fell for it and treated it as actual news.

Hey! I read it on the Internet. It must be true. wink

A rather blunt recounting of the rumor.

Another take on the story that wasn't.

I'd say that the guy who started that rumor and the site he blogs for has taken a large hit in the credibility dept.

pretty looking machine.

i read that dissipating heat as laptops got smaller and thinner is a big concern. does the case of this thing act as a giant heatsink? if so, i would imagine it could get quite uncomfortable to hold in your lap, which should give Al justification for adding rack handles.

The $800 iBook is real. Just not quite what they had claimed it was.

I'm pretty sure that refurbed MacBook isn't the deal that was rumored.

The new product matching the price point rumored is a type of docking station for MacBook. It's a 24" LED monitor with speakers, camera, and mic for the listed price of 899. My guess is that some folks saw MacBook and 899 in the same line of text and missed the real deal, causing the rumor.

The irony of it all is, since the two largest ECAD software companies do not support mac, the chips and probably the printed circuit boards inside were most likely designed on a PC. I know Intel uses Cadence software, no mac support at all and I think Motorola uses Mentor software, very little if any mac support.

It is always a catch 22 situation. I am slowly getting interested in buying a new laptop. I can get the new design for $1300. It has less connection ports, but has more RAM, storage, and a lot faster bus speed. I can get last year's model for $1000, new. Or, $850 for a rebuilt. The only advantage to the new one, is the bus speed and the aluminum case, but worth $3-450?

Actually, there are several advantages to the new one. Leopard REALLY needed the new graphics processing abilities. That is one thing that drives me nuts on my model (Gen 2 MacBook). Secondly, the entire machine is built to run faster with DDR3 memory, SATA Optical drives, etc. It also has an hour longer battery life, hard drive is easier to remove for the swapping or upgrading, LED display is 10x better in color and uses 1/3 less power, it is .2" thinner, etc.

Lots of upgrades there.

D-R, thanks for starting this post.

I'm running a Compaq nc8000 laptop, XP, 2GB RAM. It's 4+ YO, and is absolutely trouble-free, but I am pondering replacing it just 'cause of age.

I sold Apple computers years ago, SE/SE30/MACII et al, and really, really liked the product. Hated to change, but began selling Compaq. Now, many years later, I have some trepidation about changing again, but I grow weary of s-p-a-m, viruses, etc., and needs are not especially demanding.

Reading comments and suggestions with interest ..... and thanks.

I love the new designs.

Only wish the new solid state drive would come down in price. I do see that they doubled the storage capacity from 64 to 128 GB this year.

Apple always leads the field in design and performance, just wish more people would take part how nice a mac is to own....

I just picked up my new MacBook Pro on Friday night, and am using it now. Painlessly brought over all my data off my Black MacBook (which is now the wife's). Nicest Mac laptop ever.

On the design SW, recall that these new Mac can run a pile of different OS's. A co-worker installed OpenSolaris under Virtual Box on his MacBook Pro, and that seems to run Cadence Allegro pretty well. But, anything Windows can do, this can do...

I'm surprised Cadence doesn't support MacOS as they continue to support Solaris and have for years.
