A 66-foot shrimp trawler on autopilot crashed into a North Carolina pier while its driver was taking a sip of soda, causing thousands of dollars in damages.
The accident left five wrecked boats, boat lifts and the floating dock in its wake, according to North Carolina’s Star News Online.
“He had turned around to get a drink of soda," Liam Walmsley of the U.S. Coast Guard told the Star News. "When he turned back around, he was crashing into the pier.”
The driver told the Coast Guard he stopped briefly but left the scene of the wreck when he could find nowhere to tie his boat.
The Coast Guard stopped him 3.5 miles downstream on the Intracoastal Waterway, a major cargo vessel route.
