LOS ANGELES -- California U.S. Reps. Loretta and Linda Sanchez say their brother Henry and his girlfriend are missing after a possible boating crashn off the Southern California coast.

The sisters said in a statement issued Friday that a debris field found off the coast contained fragments from the boat their brother was aboard with his girlfriend, Penny Avila. Authorities said life jackets, a cooler with food, a sandal, and pieces of a boat were found in the water, according to the Long Beach Press-Telegram newspaper.

The Coast Guard said Henry Sanchez and his girlfriend left Alamitos Bay near Long Beach late Wednesday or early Thursday en route to Santa Catalina Island and never arrived.

Ensign Stephanie Young said the debris was found about five miles south of the Los Angeles harbor entrance at 7:30 a.m. Thursday. Young said investigators are attempting to determine whether there was a collision.

The incident likely took place in a so-called precautionary area where northbound and southbound maritime traffic meets outside the twin ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

"We have an indication there was a possible collision and we're still looking into that," Young said.

The Sanchez sisters released the following joint statement:

"Yesterday afternoon, our family was notified by the U.S. Coast Guard of a possible boating accident involving a family member. Our brother Henry Sanchez and his girlfriend Penny Avila left the Long Beach Harbor en route to Catalina Island at midnight and they never arrived. A debris field was found off the coast and it was determined fragments were from the boat our brother was on. Our family is thankful of the search and rescue efforts by the U.S. Coast Guard and other local agencies. We pray and hope that Henry and Penny are found alive and well."

Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Steve Hall said the couple were in a Bayliner pleasure boat. Investigators were working to identify a second vessel, he said.

The Coast Guard, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and other agencies were searched the ocean and checked area hospitals, Young said.

A secondary search crew used sonar. The Coast Guard suspended its search Friday afternoon.

Crews plan to return to the site Saturday.

Catalina, about 20 miles off the coast, is a popular destination for boaters.

Loretta Sanchez represents the 47th District in Orange County. Linda Sanchez represents the 39th District in Los Angeles County.

LOS ANGELES -- A recreational vessel found on the ocean floor Tuesday by Los Angeles County sheriff's dive teams is believed to be the Bayliner that missing boaters Henry Sanchez and his companion were aboard, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.

The 51-year-old brother of congresswomen Loretta and Linda Sanchez and his companion, 48-year-old Penny Avila, both of Santa Ana, are believed to have been killed early last Thursday when their motorboat collided with the Islander, a barge being towed by Rebel II, a tugboat out of San Pedro.

A debris field about five miles offshore was reported by a boater the following morning, and investigators recovered from the Islander a section of fiberglass containing a vessel registration number matching Sanchez's boat, according to the Coast Guard.

After searching more than 300 square miles into the next night, the Coast Guard suspended the search for survivors but continued investigating the circumstances of the accident.

The boat fitting the profile of the missing 26-foot Bayliner was found upside down on the ocean floor, fives miles south of the entrance to Los Angeles Harbor at a depth of 150 feet, about 12:30 p.m.

Based on past photos of the boat and the location of the wreck near the suspected collision site, authorities are convinced they have found the missing vessel, according to the Coast Guard.

Later Tuesday, agencies involved in the hunt will develop a dive plan to put into effect Wednesday morning in an attempt to refloat the hull and pass it on to the Coast Guard for evidence in the investigation.

Agencies involved in the search included the Coast Guard, the Los Angeles Port Police, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Long Beach Fire Department and Los Angeles County Lifeguards.

Sanchez and Avila were en route from Alamitos Bay to Two Harbors on the west end of Santa Catalina Island when the collision occurred about midnight Thursday.

KABC-TV showed Coast Guard personnel bringing ashore debris including part of small metal boat, a broken ice chest, a lifejacket, wood and several toy swords. This weekend is the annual Buccaneer Days pirate-theme festival at the island village of Two Harbors.

Maybe he was pre-occupied with her while he was at the wheel?

I have seen folks (I hate to use the term Captain) try to cut in between the tug and the barge without realizing there is a tow cable attached, and the barge is moving.

If it was dark, then maybe he waited for the tug to pass not knowing there was a barge connected to it?

Sad, and probably avoidable.

I hope the folks that come on here and other sites asking about making the crossing to Catalina see this thread...

Good points. I think the barge would be lit and that there was fiberglass on the barge matching the sunken boat but that doesn't mean that the cable didn't push the boat into the barge. But the cable between the barge and the tug wouldn't be long enough such that any boat would/should pass between the two. Even if they were two separate boats, the separation distance would not be great enough to pass through.

There can be up to several hundred yards between the tug and barge offshore. That is one reason I have radar, night crossings.

Does the cable show up on the radar? Just wondering.

Even several hundred yards is too close to pass through, especially given that there is 500 sq miles of ocean between Long Beach and Catalina to chose from. That said, those shipping lanes can actually be very crowded out there.

Any word on if they had radar, gps, ais etc. VERY, VERY dangerous at night, one would think you would pay very close attention to where your going at night even with the electronic equipment.

No go on the cable showing up on radar, but both the tug and barge do and slipping inbetween them is risky. I don't even like running across the bow of a large ship a mile or more away. If my engine stopped for whatever reason half way across, I would imagine it may be a little unnerving.

I'm with you SF75, should have made the crossing while it was still light out. On the other hand, 7pm-11am probably was pretty still, no chop, nice conditions to boat in if you have the right equipment on board.

Deepv, it is pretty easy to make the mistake and come in behind the tug but in front of the barge. I almost did it once in broad daylight. There was what seemed like 1/4 mile of water between the two and it just doesn't automatically register that the two are connected.

Yup, that time of day (although it could be either way between 7pm to 9pm and 9am to 11am) would most likely make for a smooth crossing... unless there's a barge in front of you that you didn't see.

There is usually one story per year about someone hitting a barge on the Illinois River. Not to long ago, Billy linked up a story about the idiot in P-town, who ran into one 2 years ago and killed his buddy and hurt someone else.

Yeah, I've been out the Gate heading towards the salmon grounds in the fog and have seen two targets on my radar screen that I thought were two boats on more than a few occasions.

More times than not, they have turned out to be tugs towing barges.

Be careful out there!

I have seen chain used as a towing medium. One minute you don't see anything between the tug and barge and then next minute the chain comes up and out of the water and quick. If you were over the chain when it come up, it would literally cut your boat in half.

Also, even in the daylight on a clear day, a towed barge can sometimes LOOK like a seperate boat under its own power.

Not all of them are just long, square and flat...

It can be scary!

How are the tugs and barges lit up at night out there?

Part of the problem here on the rivers is a barge will only have nav lights on the tug and on the bow. So on the rare occasion that one is coming out to the channel from say a gravel pit, you may only see his bow lights and think it's another boat, but in reality there is a 300' barge sitting crossways in the channel that you can't see until right on top of it.

None of that came into play in the case that bankonit referenced, but collisions have occured in the past because of this. Usually going way too fast at night.

Yes, you got to be very careful.
