First off, OSU has not and will not play Tulsa this year, who are also undefeated. And Troy is hardly a pushover. Besides Oklahoma State, they played Ohio State and held the former #1 team to only 300 yards total offense. Troy also plays LSU in a few weeks. The first real test of the Oklahoma State team will come in two weeks when they play Missouri. After only 5 weeks, things are due to change a whole lot.

My feeling is that conference play is a flawed process. For the prime part of the season, the teams are locked in mortal combat within a small group of contenders. If you have a conference that has little national exposure, and several teams mature late, it can devalue a strong contender. If you have a highly rated conference, but a team does not get challenged, it can lead a mediocre team to a high ranking. I would favor going into conference play earlier and then have a couple of games against similar ranked teams at the end of conference play.

BTW, while some may have histories of good teams, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Mississippi State are definitely not bowl contenders this year. Second tier to my thinking.

I think the opposite is true. I think to many teams pad their schedule as it is. Conference play at least makes you play rivals and often times better teams than you would schedule on your own. Typically it only accounts for half your games, 4-6, and most teams play cupcakes the other games to pad their pockets and records. That's what is wrong with col. football. You get 4 or 5 guaranteed wins a yr. I'm sorry but there are way to many D-1 schools and for every Troy who has a decent team once in a while, there are 25 west texas girls typing schools.

A team is only as good as they show up to play.

Wow, what a week 5! Upsets all over the place.

I missed the USC upset.

Bulldog fans must really be upset. Great blackout...errr...knockout. I really looked forward to a close game, like many were expecting, but didn't see anything worth hanging around for the entire game.

And those badgers...

And that's only 3 of the upsets, all were in the top 10.

My wife and I went. We stayed until the bitter end. Oh, man, it was ugly (at least for UGA). The only positive was that the Dawgs didn't just roll-over and take it. They got up off their backs in the second half. But, too little, too late. I attended last year's blackout against Auburn. It was electric. I still get goose bumps just thinking about it. This year didn't feel the same. Electric still, but just not the same. Maybe a little apprehension in the back of my mind?

Tickets were going for >$700/ea, though.

I am a happy guy tonight. Alma Mater #1 (Missouri) rolled over Nebraska, which until recently usually occurred in the other direction. I still remember listening to the game the last time they won in Lincoln in 1978 with the clinching touchdown scored by James Wilder, who ran over half of NU's defense and carried the other half with him over the goal line on a run late in the game.

Alma Mater #2 (Florida State) actually managed to win a close game with a big 4th quarter comeback from Miami in Miami. Too bad that game is completely irrelevant these days.

Andy & Billy, I think this weekend speaks for itself. And the sports writers agree. See what Fox Sports have to say. Next weekend is going to be a big one, and I am hoping that OSU has it in them to pull off the upset.

I don't know enough about the SEC to say the Big XII is bigger, but the Big XII is certainly a strong college football conference. I do wonder if size does matter.

Oklahoma, Texas both have huge stadiums and great fan followship. But the rest of the Big XII? Does it compare to the SEC in that respect?

BTW: The Jayhawks gave me a heartattack yesterday. I thought they were going to loose. Talk about terrible execution! We don't seem to have the same defense or offensive energy and ability we had last year.

How 'bout Illinois? 500 yds total offense in Ann Arbor.

Granted, neither team is an A+ team, but IL hasn't won there since I don't know when.

You're excited about beating up on Baylor? Please. Lets see in a few week now that their cupcake schedule is done. Interesting, the top 5 in the Big 12, Ok, Ok St, Tx, Kan and MZ have played a total of 3 top 25 teams no top 10 teams. Bama alone has beaten # 2 and #9. Their schedules so far have been padded with pansies like Chattanooga, Troy and Cincinatti. Not much to brag about beating them by 30 points IMO.

seadog, yep the pundits are saying the Big 12 is the best. But I'll wait to see what happens in the BCS bowls, thank you.

(Andy, I know it's hard, kinda like spelling Chaparral, you have to own one to be able to spell it. Or be a member to know how to spell Presbyterian. Well, you have to have lived there to know how to spell Cincinnati! grin wink )

I could care less how you spell it, I just know they can't play play football in Ohio on a national level outside of Columbus.

I think TX is the biggest school in the nation. As far as football stadiums, TN has the largest or one of, close to 100,000 idiots in prison orange. That way they can report back to the chain gangs after the game is over.
