It's no secret how much I enjoy being on the Hudson and the appreciation of it's beauty, but yesterday I found even more to love...

I could not get on the water - so the next best thing - Over the water - these shots are from just north of the Kingston NY Bridge. On the right river bank is the entrance to Roundout Creek that leads to the Kingston River Front district.

The Second Mate's Boyscout Troop earned their Avaiation merit badge yesterday at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. We spent the last day of summer in some of the most beautiful area I've ever been to, enjoying a wonderfull air show of antique planes.

The 1929 Bi-Plane we took the flight in

Awesome pictures!!! I LOVE usa1 being up in the air. The only thing better than being in the air is being on the water with the admiral and a frosty adult beverage.

Way cool. I have always wanted to take a ride in a biplane, sounds like a blast!

way cool pics. i've taken a ride in a glider and flew a small ultralight once (with an instructor). i also skydived once (which was enough for me). what i would still love to do is go for a hot air baloon ride and take a ride in an old bi-plane, like you did. where was the airport / plane ride?

Bruce,

We were in the town of Rhinebeck, NY - @ 100 miles North of NYC, just west of Kingston NY exit off the NY Thruway.

Here is a link to the Aerodrome's site.
Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome Website

The admrial and I are looking in to a fall foilage Boat / Airshow weekend in the aera. I've been on the Hudson a few times south of Kingston and once North of Albany, but not between Kingston and Albany, so perhaps a trip to explore the area on water and some off water activites.

Scott L,

Great stuff! Looks like a blast. Gorgeous area, bet it is even more beautiful once the leaves change.

Thanks for sharing.

Great pics Scott. Did they start the engine by pulling on the prop?

My Dad had a Tiger Moth mny years ago which he used to tow gliders up into the air.

This was not his, just showing what they look like.

Mark,

I don't know - the plane was running tours constantly - I only saw one plane hand started during the show.

Justi - you are so right this area offers really great fall colors. On October 4th and 5th they are having a Pumpkin Fest there, I'm lobbying with Admrial for a family boat / plane weekend.

A great example of the beauty of the fall in the Hudson Valley = A shot of some guy who I think is now in a witness protection program - had to change everything - job, his looks, his location - even his boat wink

I use to be in a R/C airplane club located in the Finger Lakes. Many club members would go to the museum for an extended weekend. Never made the trip myself but it would be nice. Another aviation destination in NY is the Curtis Museum located near Corning/ Elmira.

How many MB does your son have? What rank is he? I made it to Eagle and then time ran out.

On Holiday,

Belive it or not, this is his 1st MB, he crossed over a few years ago but did not want to continue to be a Boyscout. A couple of his buds encouraged him to get back in to it and over July he went to summer camp and now this experience.

My 1st mate is now 16 1/2, and at last count had @ 45 MBs and is waiting on his board of review for Life Scout. He actually is only a few requirements away to Eagle and only really has his service project to accomplish along with the time requirement in a leadership position.
