I mean, this is just tooooo weird. Does strange stuff like this just happen to me?
Here I was, minding my own business about 3 miles off shore, when I see something floating in the water. Nobody else around, nice day, 1-2ft swells, good visibility.
Being the good boating citizen that I am, I usually pick up mylar balloons or other junk if I can fit it on my boat. So I go check it out.
From a short distance I see this

HUH? is that a body floating in the water???
I get closer and realize it is not a body. Still a little confused, not putting 2+2 together, thinking is it marking a dive spot? Snorkeling?
Then I thought jeez, what if it's booby-trapped (really, that did cross my mind before I saw them). Curiosity gets the best of me, and I grab the boat hook and get closer.
I flip 'it' over and this is what I see (shot from a bit of a distance so that admin doesn't *poof* this thread

No joke, I really do not make this stuff up. Good thing I bring a camera along or you guys would think I was writing a novel or something.
OK, wait, there is more. Like I said, I usually pick up trash, but I have this mental picture of me coming back to the Shelter Island launch ramp and some tourist family there, dad with his camera, little daughter screaming, "Mommy, what does that man have in his boat?!"
Yes, I really thought that, especially since I was boating solo. Not a good reason to be on the 6 o'clock news.
So I left it there, 2 1/2 miles off of Point Loma.
But I felt guilty coming back in, so I used my cell phone and called the San Diego Coast Guard station on the bay. NO way was I going to explain this on open channel 16 VHF.
Told the guy who picked up at the Coast Guard station that if someone reported seeing a body 2 miles out, it was really just a life-size blow-up doll.
He asked me if I retrieved it. I said, "would you bring it back to a public paunch ramp in an open-bow boat?"
He said, "I understand sir, thanks for calling it in, it may save us a rescue operation."
Yeah, I can picture the laughter in the station as he told everyone there about the phone call he just got.
Like I said, just plain bizarro.
