When you buy a new vehicle, it usually comes with a set of paper placards in which the dealer has their name and/or slogan on it, along with a set of license plate frames with their name too.

Quite a few folks that I know remove any sign of their selling dealers' name from their vehicle as soon as they get home. They say that the dealer isn't paying them to advertise for them, so why leave them on?

On the opposite end, other folks like to leave the placard on to let everyone know that they just got a new car. Some even well after they receive their license plates...

One thing that we don't see too often here in CA, are the little name plates of the dealer that are attached to the trunk lids or tailgate. They look to be metal and I've noticed screw heads or rivets that are used to attach them.

What are your feelings?

I ALWAYS remove the license plate 'extras' and removed a decal with the dealership name from the back of my Aztek. I'd be really annoyed if a plate was mechanically attached. I think they're generally stick ons, whatever they look like.

I agree with the not being payed to advertise idea.

Most leave out chrome license plate frames on their car indefinitely, and also leave the inserts in until they get their plates from the DMV.

Nevada doesn't have plate inserts because they print you a temporary plate that goes in it's place. The dealer surrounds usually come off. Our Subaru, which was bought in SLC had the dealer name on a sticker on it. I was going to take it off, but never got around to it. The main bummer is the fact it was put on crooked.

If I bought a car and the dealer name was riveted on, I wouldn't take it if I noticed it before I drove off. Something else to look for. I don't like the fact they put their name on it, but to rivet or screw it on is completely over the line in my book.

I also remove all signage representing the dealership from which I purchase a vehicle. This isn't out of ire or not wanting to advertise for free. I just think it detracts from the look of the car/truck/boat. I buy things because of what they are, not where they are from. Much like Silverbullet, a riveted or screwed on nameplate is a deal-breaker. Chances are I can get whatever it is someplace else without the gewgaw.

When I buy a new car I politely ask that none of the stickers or plate frames be put on the car, they usually have no issue with that. If a sticker or plate has already been put on, removing it is the first thing I do when I get it home.

I have never bought a brand new car. And the used ones I have bought didn't have any stickers, plates, or license frames on them.

However, now that I work for a dealership, if I ever buy a car from them, I will put on their license plate frame. But no stickers on the car, thank you.

I have bought 8 new cars in my life. I tell the dealer before I sign the papers that I do not want any dealership decals, license plate frames, etc. If there is anything like that on the car I will not accept it. I have not had an issue yet.

I haven't worried about it on the cars, although I'd prefer not to have them. I did tell the boat dealer to leave it off.

GW's Infiniti still has the "Sacramento Infiniti" license plate frames on it because I really don't care. Kind of a slap in the face to the WA dealers who would only discount $300 off MSRP.

Me either. Altho I'd not like it if they screwed/riveted a logo on the car.

Some folks feel the dealer ID gets them some level of recognition/favor when going back for service. (These would be the same folks that display a "Sheriff's Benevelent Association" sticker in their window).

The screwed/riveted ones that I have seen have been from dealers out of state (either out of state vehicles, or used ones purchased locally). Maybe they are stick-on with faux looking rivets? But they sure look permanently attached.

I just don't see our local dealers doing that. I recall thinking it was an unusual practice.

I collect them and "upgrade" every time I find something better for my vehicle. I'm hoping that the high-end exclusive dealer tags on my mundane rides will keep the neighbors impressed. Few realize that the Porsche license plate frames I'm rockin' are actually on a Subaru. I used to long for a new ride every couple of years. Now all it takes is a screw driver and 5 minutes to trade up.

For me it depends how obnoxious the dealer tag is. Ya gotta admit, some stick out like a sore thumb.

I bought a new car in march. Car is silver, and the small chrome tag on the back blends in with the other chrome, and it doesn't bother me at all.

I have been known to take off the huge, loud ones, though.

Where I got my new truck from, if you leave the dealer front plate on, you get free inspections. I guess you can put it on right before and get a free inspection however I took mine off. I do have a sticker on the tailgate with the dealers name. I thought about taking it off but didn't want to do more damage than if I just left it on.

My FIL found a dealer license plate frame that had the same name as his in a parking lot. He got a screw driver out and started taking it off. The owner saw it and asked what he was doing and then helped him the rest of the way. Thankfully the vehicle was in the parking lot of a wedding they were both attending however they didn't know each other.

every "dealer ad" you leave on a car spreads their name in your area, if they can maintain a level of business that way then they do not have to spend money on more expensive types of advertising. Thus, saving you money as they can sell cars with less overhead cost, or stay in business to service you. Everything you do has consequences, some may cost you money in the long run. I know that I've sold many cars from people asking my customers (that they knew where my customers from the sticker or front plate) if I was reputable, I've cut my ads in all local papers as a result and lowered my margin.

Never thought about it really. Come to think of it, I cant say for sure if I have a dealer sticker or tag on either car. Although I am pretty sure there is a big GMC or Accura in the middle of the grill.

As a kid, I do remember my dad saying that he would not buy a car from "Lampley's USED Cars".

As soon as we got home with the mustang all the stickers and liscensce plate frames were removed. I just don't care for the way it looks.

I am typically pretty hard on cars. Usually within a year or two, the dealer will take off all signage during service in an attempt to not be associated with my car.

I have thought about the providing "free" advertising issue for dealer but then figured, heck, there's more important things to worry about in life than a dealer sticker on back of my car/truck.

If it has a front dealer tag it gets replaced with a Georgia Tech tag anyway. I would likely remove a license frame too as I don't care for looks...not because of the free advertising issue.

Should you also remove all mfr/brand labels? After all, isn't that kinda advertising too?

Just how much are people expecting to get paid for this? They are getting free lic plate frames, isn't that a form of payment? These things don't just grow on trees.....

Are they getting paid by the mfg., or are they also removing all FORD, CHEVROLET, TOYOTA, etc... emblems as well?

This is WAY off the worry chart for me. However, what I don't like to do (not that I've never) is buy or wear clothing, hats, etc... that advertise a product.

I remove all from the car ar ask they never be put on. But at the Nissan dealer if you leave it on you don;t have to grab your saleman to get the free car wash, just pull up. Now on the boat trailer I have the dealer supplied guideon cover that I won't replace. Still learning to trailer the inboard and keep hitting them, soon you can't tell who the dealer is.
