For my VP 5.7 Gi DP. Does $915.00 sound right? I was a little taken back by it, I remember some discusion about it around here before but can't remember the cost numbers. This isn't from the dealer I bought from because I am fed up with their service department.

I'd want to know 1) their hourly rate, 2) What service is being done, 3) What consumables are being used.

Even though you might not go there, what would the other dealer charge?

Do you HAVE to have it done to protect a warranty?

Yes (I assume) to protect the warranty. There are only three authorized VP shops in the county, one being the original dealer and the other looks more like a junk yard than I like.

They are doing everything required by VP for the 100 hr service, not sure what their shop rate is, didn't ask. I am actually a little ahead on the 100 since I am only at 87 or so, but last time out it shredded a water pump impeller and got hot, so I figure might as well let them do it now. They can't get it in until the 22nd.

Can't you just do it yourself? The warranty on a car doesn't get cancelled because you didn't bend over at the dealer for an oil change and I don't think it does for a boat either.

Call Volvo at 757-436-5100 and ask to talk with a customer rep.

Ask them for dealer's names and contact info.

Seems high. I spend less for TWO Volvo engines and drives in the Chesapeake Bay area.

Call your boat builder at 352-528-2628. Ask for their Customer Service Rep for your zip code area. Ask for his thoughts about Volvo service in your area, too.

That's way high uneless they are doing something really special or you have the highest rates in the world.

I paid(overpaid I might add) for a 100 hour service on our last boat and it was under $500. Part of the overpay was $105 for spark plugs and 4 hours in labor ($300). I don't know for sure if they pulled the drive. If not, then I got taken. If they did remove the drive, then maybe labor is ok.

I agree to the earlier post and would be looking for a breakdown of the labor and the parts/fuids being used.

Ok, doing this in my head, and trying for the 'high' side...

Pull and replace the drive, 1 hour
Align drive, 1/2 hour
Replace the water pump impeller, 1 hour plus $30 part
Change oil, 1/2 hour plus what, $25 in oil and filter...
Change water separator, 15 minutes plus $10 for the filter
Grease everything, 15 minutes plus $8 for grease

SO, I get 3.5 hours labor, say $85 per hour, and $73 in materials...

I get $370.50.

Even if I'm half wrong that's STILL only $740....

Maybe the extra money is for the vaseline you'll be needing...
rolleyes

IMO, $915 is ridiculous...

If you have the 2+4 Extended Protection plan from Volvo like I do, you can do it yourself. Just save the receipts. And that is way to much...highway robbery!

I do have the 2+4 plan. Maybe I miss heard what he said on the amount, I will check tomorrow. The only thing that concerned me about doing it myself was the alignment, never done it and don't what to look for.

Chris,

I paid around $575 for my 100 hr. earlier this year. I have the 4.3Gxi with an SX drive....but I don't think that it makes it $300+ more for the bigger engine and different drive.

Keep me posted. I've almost got 100 hours on mine, and plan on doing the service myself here shortly. I'll call my dealer tomorrow and get a price from them and what exactly it includes.

What does your dealer include in the 100hr service?

I would have to agree with FR. That seems way high. If I decide to have my drive pulled this winter for service, I'm considering using a local mobile marine mechanic and have it done right in my drive way. Would this be an option for you? You could then service the items your self that your comfortable with, and have the rest like the alignment done by the mechanic. Might also make it easier to shop price and expertise.

Juan, did you use Quality? That is who I talked to. Wonder if it's one of those deals where they are busy with people that bought boats from them and don't have time (since next available appointment is 1 1/2 weeks out) to deal with others so they throw out a high number and hope I will go away?

I think I will take seabuddy's advice. I will also call my original dealer for a price, I guess for three or four hundred less I could deal with having to give it a good cleaning when I get it back from those guys. Problem with them is I have never had one visit for one problem, always had to take it back for some stupid thing.

I have no problem taking on any or all of it myself, even the alingment if I can find out what to do, I am fairly mechanically inclined.

I also have a bit if an issue with the impeller failure and resulting over heat. The engine would not start after that (I replaced the impeller on the water). It acted like it was siezed, the starter would hit but the engine didn't turn over, and the starter would grind, took it a good 45 minutes before it would turn over. Once it did turn over it wouldn't start, acted flooded, so I held it wide open and it fired. Seemed ok after that, ran it for about 2 hours pulling the tubes. On the way back to the ramp, running pretty hard 3500 to 4000 rpm's for maybe 5 minutes I got another alarm. Looked down expecting the temp guage to be pegged, nope, oil pressure way down low. It bounced back up before the boat slowed to idle and never flinched again, but it has me concerned. Also the starter doesn't sound right any more, very tinny sounding when starting the engine, very noticeabley different than before the problems.

Chris,

I did not use Quality, I took it to the Intercoastal Marine in Bradenton. I tried to get in at Quality the week before labor day, and they told me that they where 2 weeks out. I called Intercoastal, and they where 3 weeks out. Luckily, my issue was just a circuit breaker worth $4.95 plus tax. Quality's hr. rate is $109.

I hope that it is nothing serious, and that the warranty can cover the oil and starter issue. YIKES!

Chris,

Did you try Indian Springs Marina? They seem to be the new Monterey dealer, and I know that Dan's Larson has the 4.3GXi just like I do. He is happy with them, or at least he was the last time that I talked to him.

Wasn't sure if they had a service department, didn't look like it on their website. They are the new Monterey dealer. I will call them today, they were closed yesterday.

Just called my dealer, and $300 for a 100hr service, and an extra $95 for winterazation, and $65 for my freshwater system. Not bad in my book, but I like to do everything myself, so that should save me a few hundred.

From my original dealer today, who is no longer a Monterey dealer but is still a VP shop, $669.00. Still waiting to hear from one more, didn't have time to deal with it much today.

I have found the place, new local Monterey dealer who is treating me as if I bought the boat from them. Just talking to them on the phone and seeing the facility before gives me a good feeling about them. Oh yeah, the cost is less than either of the other two.

By the way, they told me "list price" for the service is $840.00, for what that is worth. $519 is what they are charging me. Taking it to them tomorrow.

List?? You are already paying "list" on the parts. So if you add the list price for the parts to the labor needed, and times all that by 2 to get another list? That marina must be having a rough year!
