In our new-ish slip we get full, blazing, HOT, sun in the afternoon so we decided it was time to try some screen. We used 80% Solar Screen in a light grey (compliments the navy canvas real well).

First we installed some track to the underside of the overhang. We only have the back screens done and will work on the sides in the next week or two.

The heat reflected is amazing. In addition it adds some privacy... no more living in a fish bowl.

We have a few small refinements to make but we are pretty darn happy with the outcome. We designed it so all 3 pieces can be rolled up or down independently of the enclosure panels. Here you see the sides up and the center glass panel down.

Not as fancy as some of Al's canvas projects but "cool" none the less smile

You'll love those for the heat reduction. Our set of screens are white and they keep it about 20 degrees cooler inside than the outside temps......plus they keep the bugs out.

They look nice on YOLO.

Screens on boats are great. Our boat is covered with blue screen material. This summer we took the screens off the windows...

YAY, the boat looks cool with black windows!

YAY, we can see OUT of the windows better!

HEY, the bugs are getting past the 'regular' window screens!!

HEY, it's like 1000° in here now!!!

--screens are back up! smile

(which reminds me, I painted them all with Krylon's plastic paint, great stuff!)

So your real happy with Krylon's plastic paint? My wife was going to make a new windshield screen for our neighbor (48 Sea Ray Sedan). We took it off to measure and it's massive!! I was wondering if that plastic spray would work on his old one.

I have been wanting to do something similar. Sunbrella makes a product called Sunbrella Shade that I might try. Some have used PhiferTex, and I do have some of that lying around, but I am not sure which would work best. What stuff did you use?

None of these pictures are great, but here goes:

This is one of the "for sale" pics of our boat, you can see the screens, especially the front one, are getting a bit shabby. These screens faced the west Arizona sun, and are getting a little crispy...

This is a pic of when we trailered it last October. You can see the front screen is darker, that's the screen I tried out first. The reason for the missing screen is we had a swamp cooler in that window. I tried painting that screen with regular spray paint, that didn't work well at all.

This is a pic I took with the wife's camera last week, it's a bit 'muddy' but at least it shows that the screens look 100% better. They look good up close too. I painted ALL the screens, front and back too.

There's only 3 screens on the starboard side. The front room windows are pretty bit, 42" x 80". If I remember, it took not quite a full can to do one of those screens twice. Seems I bought 12 cans to do everything, and I have about 1/2 can left. There's a couple of screens I tried to 'stretch' that could use one more coat, but they look okay for now.

About $50 to add some life to the screens, and they look better now than 2-1/2 years ago, I'm happy! Not sure how long the paint will take the sun, have to wait and see.

BTW, the screen material is some sort of rubbery stuff, not typical window screen (sorry for the bug!)...

Reminds me a bit of PhiferTex, but it only has a single weave. However, it is sort of a plastic looking stuff.

Thanks for pics and details, FR. I'll see if he want's to try that first.

The screen we used was Phifer SunTex 80% although we probably should have gone with 90%. We chose Phifer SunTex because it comes wider than 54" (it was 96" I think?) BUT most companies will only sell 100 foot rolls. My wife found some one online that would sell by the foot, but it was a bit pricey. We had some left over navy Stamoid 1" binding that we used on the edges.

My wife did all of the research so a few of the details above, like product width, may not completely accurate smile

I'm not sure what kind of screen this is... My pic above is quite close-up, that double weave isn't so noticible when just looking at it. (this is the unpainted in-side. Had to put a bug in the pic!)
wink
