'Coons are nasty little buggers. When I lived in the country they dug up our flower beds and flower pots, every fargin night.
I had a large "Have-a-heart" brand trap (needs to be large), which I baited with that roasted chicken from the grocery store.
Very effective, but you have to dispose of them. Wife wouldn't let me shoot them, so I dropped them off on the way to work.
They will "mess" your vehicle, requires an old tarp under the trap. Oh, and good luck if you catch a skunk (been there).
I would not want 'coons around. They are tough, smart, and aggressive. "Successful" breeders, too.

Coon Meal In A Bag Sent in by Charlie Barrett.
First, make sure when you were dressing these critters, you have removed the "kernels" (scent glands) from under the arms and legs. They leave a distinct flavor if you don't.
~ 1 cleaned raccoon ~ 8 medium Irish(red) potatoes, peeled and cubed ~ 3 lb bag baby carrots ~ 2 large onions, sliced into 1/2" slices ~ 4 bell peppers, diced ~ 4 medium turnips, quartered ~ 1 can cream of mushroom soup ~ 1 1/2 cups water ~ 2 oz Morton's Natures Seasoning ~ 1 large baking bag, turkey size ~ electric roasting oven with liner
Place coon in the baking bag. Add the potatoes, carrots, onions, peppers and turnips.
Mix the soup and water together in a bowl. Add to bag.
Sprinkle on the Morton's seasoning evenly as possible.
Seal bag.
Put 1 gallon of water in the roaster to make a water bath.
Place the bag in the liner and place in roaster.
Cook for 6 - 8 hours at 250 degrees.
Serve and enjoy.
* You can cook this in the oven if you don't have a roaster. Adjust cooking time as needed.
Charlie is a friend of mine but my wife no longer lets him bring vittles to the pot luck suppers...he brings paper plates and stuff. He was kind of miffed by this...said the whole idea of a pot luck was whatever you were lucky enough to find stretched out on the road. What really tore it with my wife was the 'dillo stuffed deer. Charlie was REALLY luck that day.

To add salt to the wound, the admiral found a bag of chewed-on cookies in the pantry this afternoon. Mouse. And she hates mice about more than anything I can think of. A little searching turned up a couple of 'tracks'. This really irks me, since I have sticky traps all over the place. The wife opened the pantry door to see if anything else had been eaten, and she heard him scurry around. That was fun I'd picked up some moth balls to try and discourage the racoons. The only way out of the pantry was under the door, or possibly via around the fridge if there's a way thru that I don't know about. I made a gauntlet of sticky pads in front of the door, no possible way around them. And I put a half dozen moth balls behind the fridge to discourage him from going out that way... 10 minutes later, I found the little bugger is standing in glue, got him! -----I started typing this to say that I'd rolled a bunch of moth balls under the dock near our boat, and near the gate, and that so far it seemed to be working. But I guess not... while typing "the wife opened the pantry", the wife says "there's something out there in the wagon"...arrggh!! There were 2 trash bags in the wagon and one got started on them. I ran them up to a trash can on the hard, hope he/they followed me. I did find that a box of d-con I left out LAST year had been eaten. Maybe that one will leave us alone. There's nothing on the roof to eat tonight, so hopefully the trash up in the parking lot will be enough...
