'Coons are nasty little buggers. When I lived in the country they dug up our flower beds and flower pots, every fargin night.

I had a large "Have-a-heart" brand trap (needs to be large), which I baited with that roasted chicken from the grocery store.

Very effective, but you have to dispose of them. Wife wouldn't let me shoot them, so I dropped them off on the way to work.

They will "mess" your vehicle, requires an old tarp under the trap. Oh, and good luck if you catch a skunk (been there).

I would not want 'coons around. They are tough, smart, and aggressive. "Successful" breeders, too.

"Coons" is short for raccoons, not MILs, right? Seems like it could apply to either, especially the "wife wouldn't let me shoot them" part....

Found out from Mark we have a family of 5 camped out here. On my way to fill up my water barrels last night, 4 of 'em were making tracks across the parking lot. I guess the 5th one apparently got tired of waiting for us to leave out something resembling food, cuz while I was gone he came knocking at the door! Literally! The wife found one standing up scratching at the screen door to our bedroom, scared the hell out of her! Going to moth ball the underside of the dock when I get home from work and see if that keeps them away. Our trapper guy may have left some traps out in the north 40, need to see if I can find one or two...

Ha! Brazen little buggers, aren't they!

When we were camping up at Tahoe over the 4th, a HUGE one came strolling into our campsite like it owned it and crawled up onto our campsite table looking for scraps (none to be found, since we clean up well after ourselves).

My wife and I were relaxing in our chairs when we saw it. It was about ten feet away from us. When we started making noises and talking, it just looked up at us and stayed there.

When I stood up, it decided to get off of the table.

But it sure took its sweet time doing it!

Nature... You gotta love it! LOL

OK, I'm going to hate mail from animal lover's, but ...

Those varmints are tough as nails and either dumber than a sack of door knobs or smarter than most of us.

We learned from a previous boat-in campout that the coons were a problem at the campsite. And we were worried about the rattlesnakes (never even found one).

Anyway to chase the coons away from the site on our next camping trip, the boys brought their air soft guns and paint ball guns.

Like clockworks these coons showed up in the trees all around us, so we started shooting them. We thought they would run away. All they did was climb a foot or two higher in the tree each time and continue to stare at us. I knew the air soft guns wouldn't really get their attention, but I was surprised that the paint balls didn't seem to phase them one bit.

And, yep, as soon as the last tent zipper was pulled, it was a race for the trash cans and ice chests.

And then there's the one that likes to hole up between the subfloor and our bathtub. Wakes you up in the middle of the night thinking someone's in the house.

They sure are interesting, but what a pain!

THE WAR IS ON!!!

They've went from "cute" to "a pain", but the final straw just broke my back-

Last night the farging bastiges were up on our roof!! Little prix made a huge mess. We bbq'd corn on the cob, and all the shucks were still in the garbage can. They got $#*! scattered from hell to breakfast all over upstairs.
mad

Not sure how they got up there, no marks on the screens. I guess they (or it) climbed up the ladder!

Arrgghh....a little wildlife is fine, but not this much...

Coon Meal In A Bag
Sent in by Charlie Barrett.

First, make sure when you were dressing these critters, you have removed the "kernels" (scent glands) from under the arms and legs. They leave a distinct flavor if you don't.

~ 1 cleaned raccoon
~ 8 medium Irish(red) potatoes, peeled and cubed
~ 3 lb bag baby carrots
~ 2 large onions, sliced into 1/2" slices
~ 4 bell peppers, diced
~ 4 medium turnips, quartered
~ 1 can cream of mushroom soup
~ 1 1/2 cups water
~ 2 oz Morton's Natures Seasoning
~ 1 large baking bag, turkey size
~ electric roasting oven with liner

Place coon in the baking bag. Add the potatoes, carrots, onions, peppers and turnips.

Mix the soup and water together in a bowl. Add to bag.

Sprinkle on the Morton's seasoning evenly as possible.

Seal bag.

Put 1 gallon of water in the roaster to make a water bath.

Place the bag in the liner and place in roaster.

Cook for 6 - 8 hours at 250 degrees.

Serve and enjoy.

* You can cook this in the oven if you don't have a roaster. Adjust cooking time as needed.

Charlie is a friend of mine but my wife no longer lets him bring vittles to the pot luck suppers...he brings paper plates and stuff.

He was kind of miffed by this...said the whole idea of a pot luck was whatever you were lucky enough to find stretched out on the road.

What really tore it with my wife was the 'dillo stuffed deer.

Charlie was REALLY luck that day.

To add salt to the wound, the admiral found a bag of chewed-on cookies in the pantry this afternoon. Mouse. And she hates mice about more than anything I can think of. A little searching turned up a couple of 'tracks'. This really irks me, since I have sticky traps all over the place. The wife opened the pantry door to see if anything else had been eaten, and she heard him scurry around. That was fun wink

I'd picked up some moth balls to try and discourage the racoons. The only way out of the pantry was under the door, or possibly via around the fridge if there's a way thru that I don't know about. I made a gauntlet of sticky pads in front of the door, no possible way around them. And I put a half dozen moth balls behind the fridge to discourage him from going out that way...

10 minutes later, I found the little bugger is standing in glue, got him!

-----I started typing this to say that I'd rolled a bunch of moth balls under the dock near our boat, and near the gate, and that so far it seemed to be working. But I guess not... while typing "the wife opened the pantry", the wife says "there's something out there in the wagon"...arrggh!! There were 2 trash bags in the wagon and one got started on them. I ran them up to a trash can on the hard, hope he/they followed me.

I did find that a box of d-con I left out LAST year had been eaten. Maybe that one will leave us alone. There's nothing on the roof to eat tonight, so hopefully the trash up in the parking lot will be enough...

FR.. Do you use rat guards on your mooring lines? This probably where the mice come aboard.
