On Sunday, I found the maximum stress point at which my port window was rated for. We crossed a large wake that was bounced back from a steel sea wall while hitting another approximatly the same %$#@in size comming in the opposite direction ( both 45'plus Yachts traviling down the St.Clair River) c. It was like doing the circle of death in tubing but my boat being the one flug through the wakes. Anyway it blew out my port quarter glass and I going to have to replace it. Any thoughts on where I'm going to find one?

If the frame is not damaged and all you need is the glass replaced, any good glass shop should be able to replace it. Must have been a hard hit. Hope you were standing.

Frame is fine, it just shaddered the window into a Million pieces.(safety glass) I think the twisting motion and the 2nd wake smack was to much for it. It was like being in a blender. Bussiest weekend for boat traffic in a long time.

We anchored up in this bay with a bunch of other boats. We even had a fly over from a couple of fighter jets from the local air base across the lake. They flew in low, made a hard banking turn and headed out over the lake. You couldn't hear anything but those two jets for 30 seconds or so. Had a Great Weekend even with breaking a window.

You better replace it fast . . . it sounds like that window is a major structural component of the boat! smile

Per the dealer this afternoon you can't get the glass you have to get the whole port windshield and replace. $1450.00 ouch I fired off a e-mail to Chap HQ to verify.

Do we have any Glass Shop owners or anyone in the glass bussinees on the board? If so, I have questions.

Chap does not make the Windshied - the entire unit is purchased from manfacture - In you case I belive it to be Taylor.

Contact info

REPLACEMENT OR SERVICE PARTS
and ** ALL RETAIL INQUIRIES **

CUSTOMER SERVICE: 518-773-0636

If you are a boat owner, marina, service yard, or other
non-O.E.M. customer (i.e. not the manufacturer of the original boat), please call the number above for the fastest service.

Or... Fax: 518-773-2919 / Email: tms@taylormarine.com

Another outlet for you may be a marine salvage parts dealer. Chap's 5 piece windshield was used on several models.

BTW - it should be an covered claim on your insurance policy.

Thanks Scott

I haven't contacted the insurance yet. I was checking on price and availability first to see if it was going to be worth while. It looks like I need to contact my insurance.

I called Taylor and they advised that they only sell as a unit, will not sell to me and I would need to order through the dealer.

Taylor is ridiculous when it comes to providing windshield parts. Borderline criminal, actually.

Find a local custom glass shop and have them cut a piece of glass to fit it and install it. You won't be missing a thing, and you won't be sorry.

I made a template tomight that I'm taking to the glass shop. Will post pics of the repair if I go that route.

Insurance will cover it if I want the whole thing replaced.

New piece of glass will probably be worth not bothering your ins. co. in the long run...

FR, Your right.

Not worth making a claim at this point.
I stopped at the glass shop today with the cardboard templete and they estimated a new piece cut and tempered for $125. Thats a far cry from $1400 plus installation. I'm now going to make the templete in hardboard to make sure it fits properly and that its not touching or binding anywhere. The framework comes apart pretty easy and shouldn't be a issue. After I drop off the templete they expect it to take 2 weeks to get it back.

On another note, I posted this same issue on the Chap board and my post was edited because it had prices for the replacement cost of the windshield. Not to sure why it needed to be edited out but they did. I just stated the cost that the dealer quoted and advised that it must be purchased as a unit. No foul language or Chap bashing.
Here's what I posted:

"NO PRICING DISCUSSION PERMITTED for the left side winsdshield assy plus installation at the Chap dealer."

In a ever growing "green" recycle, reduce waste world I find it funny that they do not offer replacement glass without replacing everything. I find it even funnier that Taylor will not sell when they have a retail customer service system set up but when Chap was mentioned they quickly said that it must go through a dealer.

Oh well, thier loss.

That's highway robbery. I was able to buy a front port and center windshield glass for my 1988 Four Winns when it was 16 years old from Water Bonnet in Florida. Each piece was a little over $100. Easy to install, it was tempered bent glass. You just have to be careful with screws that hold the frame together, they cannot touch the glass. I am glad the OE supplier for my glass was NOT Taylor Made!

I'm still wondering why you are not questioning as to why the glass shattered in the first place. idn

Sure, boats may flex a bit, but busting tempered glass, that is concerning. It may be as simple as a sharp edge within the frame protruding into the glass edge. I would check it out before the new glass is installed. Else you may be posting this topic again.
