We noticed a few spots of oil on the garage floor where my wife parks her 2004 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Its still covered by the 7/70 powertrain warranty so we took it in.

The service manager called to confirm that we indeed had an oil leak from the rear main seal which would be replaced and it would be covered minus the $100 deductible described in the warranty. He then goes on to ask me if we want an oil change at their normal $28 rate.

It seems to me that besides paying for a new oil filter, shouldnt the repair to the oil seal involve replacing the oil and if so, it would seem this should be picked up by the warranty.

It's not that I mind paying for an oil change but I want to be sure the service department isnt padding this at my expense.

Any thoughts?

It's $28. Pay it and be happy.

Perhaps that is just the attitude the dealer is taking as well.

$28 is $28...if I can save it I will. That is $28 more I will have when I retire. That does not sound right to me. There is no way for the fix to be made without changing the oil...I would think it would be in the warranty expense as well.

I picked up the vehicle at lunch today. The service manager contends that Jeep (Chrysler) has the service dept retain the old oil for such a repair and wont reimburse for new oil. I asked him what they do in the event of a transmission claim as they certainly would never reuse the motor oil. He claimed in those cases, Chrysler will allow for the fluid change.

I didnt really feel like getting into a pis$ing match over this with him so I paid the bill.

I do plan on following up directly with Chrysler to see if this is indeed true although this may be an exercise in futility . .

Called Chrysler customer care . . .

Spoke with a service rep named "John" (highly unlikely this was his birth name)

Still, "John", didnt quite seem to understand what I was explaining however he did his due diligence reading from his script indicating that the extended powertrain warranty only covers components and labor.

Appearently oil is not considered a component . . .

The good news is that at least Chrysler covered the oil leak.

I didn't have to pay for coolant when the 7/70 replaced my water pump. It isn't right that you have to pay for an oil change. I would personally persue it further, and get your $28 back.

As in the terms of your warranty, they did have to cover the oil leak. Does it say anything in the warranty paperwork about fluid loss/filled during a covered repair?

So, the fact that they have to drain it in order to do the covered repair doesn't have any bearing on this?

I'd pursue it on principle.

I totally agree -

Unfortunately, any attempt at reasoning with an offshore customer service rep wasnt likely to produce results. I may just try the old pen and paper method.

Of course by this time tomorrow, I wont likely give a crap about it anymore.

Tell Haji that you need to talk to level two. Get this thing elevated. You have to drain the oil to replace the seal so that is part of the repair, but maybe the filter costs $28 anyway?
