Make it hard or soft via the air pressure.

My slip has them. They were installed by the former owner. They work well and have probably saved the hull from a rub or scratch.

No.

Never have.

Folks at the yacht club refer to them as "training wheels".

But then again, those are folks at a yacht club...

Seems like good idea if you have wind.

Is the height easily adjustable? If so, how much?

Bolt it high or low to the dock would be my guess.

If lake levels change, ours can fluctuate 3 to 6 inches during the week, it would have to be easily adjustable for us to make use of it. Might work well for a lake that never changes. Or if you have a floating dock.

Yeah, I have seen them attached to floating docks more than anything. Mostly at the corners, but also along the inside of the slip.

They have different mounts available for them for different applications (corners vs straight sides).

They can come in handy, but I never felt the need for them.

A few different MFG's offer them as well as Taylor.

I would think training wheels are preferable to training gouges...

Don't put em on the dock.. What if... you mounted them to the boat.. Get em so they fit flush while cruising along.,then push a button and they electrically or hydraulicly (sp) extend from the boat.. huh huh.. Hidden like.. behind a flap that drops out of the way when they extend... yea, that's it... grouphug

These are great if they are changed out periodically...I am on a forklift dry storage system...they have these and I tip the dock hands to keep me off of them!

As they get older they get hard and dirty and they leave marks...think about old nasty fenders..would you use them on your boat? The marks will come out with a little elbow grease but they are still aggravating (edited for younger viewers)
