Last weekend, my son and I went to the Indy Air Show at Mount Comfort Airport in Indy.

They had the F-22 Raptor to open and close the show. It did a real honest-to-goodness acrobatic demonstration with loops, dives, high speed runs, etc.

The plane is simply phenomenal. They also had a Navy F-18 demonstration, and the Raptor would easily eat it for lunch.

Watch the plane generate instant clouds. Watch it go from 1500 feet horizontal to vertical and fly to 10,000 then float down like a feather. High speed pass is over 600 knots.

Enjoy the video:

Sorry about the shakiness of the filming. All I had with me was my Canon Powershot A540 digital camera - which isn't exactly made for getting high quality video.

Great video. I saw a documentary on this plane. The closing thought was that it may be the last generation of manned fighter aircraft. Remote operation may be next, but it's hard to imagine anything taking the place of these pilots. They are incredible.

I have doubts about the aerial battlefield ever becoming 100% robotic, but would not be surprised if this turns out to be the last of the "100% manned" fleets.

I met General Chuck Yeager in 1984 after a lecture at KU, and often marvel at how aircraft technology has changed since his time.
