I saw that the tall ships came into San Diego bay last night, so I thought I'd make a trip down there to take a few photos.

This event happens once every three years; we are the last stop on the Pacific coast tour for the 15 Tall Ships.

News article here.

Sort of hoped I would catch a few of them under sail, so I stopped at the Shelter Island ramp area first. No luck there, but took a few pix I thought might interest a few of you.

This guy was making good time, note the North Island base helos behind him. It was a clearer day than is usual in the summer, this was a really long telephoto shot.

PrimeTime coming back in after a day's catch

29 ft. Striper, got to be a heavy haul.

Old Coast Guard ship, the Eagle

Some detail from the interior. How would you like to be in charge of those lines?

Rigging detail

Another of the tall ships

The tall ships were docked in the same area the Princess Mariana was in last week. Only last week, you were free to walk the edge of the dock and take pictures.

This week, since they wouldn't let you close unless you bought a $20 ticket, I could not get the close-ups I wanted. (and since I was sort of doing a hit-and-run shoot, I wasn't about to pay $20, much as I love you all...)

They were pretty clever, they blocked the entire walk with vendor booths and awnings, it looked like this:

You could not get around them for a clear picture.

Saw this guy on the freeway headed back to Arizona on the way home.

Interesting how the old OMC's sort of fitted into a drive bracket on the transom.

Troop, thanks for sharing the pics. I love that old USCG ship. There was an article about it in the paper recently. Quite a ship and quite an adventure for the coasties aboard.

I am soooooo jealous of where you boat and the things you get to see going to sea.

Beautiful shots troop... love those tall ships! All the intricate lines and the skill it takes to handle them blow my mind. How would you like to have to climb a rope ladder to the crow's nest in heavy seas? Or climb out on the top yardarm to unfurl a sail caught up in the lines? Now that's seamanship! (Or big cajones!) I didn't like sitting in the chair and being winched up while tethered, in DRY DOCK!

The last tall ship looks like the 'Corinthian', a tall ship that used to be permanently moored in the harbor in Lahaina.

That 29 Striper being hauled by that little truck? Even if it's a 2500, that seems waaaaaay over weight. Usually see a 3500 dually diesel pulling something like that!

Great shots of the Eagle! I attended the Coast Guard Academy and sailed that thing. It is used as a training ship for the Cadets. One interesting tibit is that the very top section (10 ft or so) of the main mast has a saying sratched into the very top, but there isn't anything to clip the safety belt into. So the only people who knows what it says had to shimmy up the last 10 ft or so (without a harness).

Great pics!

We had the Eagle here in SF Bay a short time ago. $10 to board her and you couldn't go below decks.

Those OMC SeaDrives were a nightmare. You don't see too many of them anymore.

And for good reason...

Troop - Thanks for the quality pics...again. grin

Nu2 - +1. I was looking at the rigging in awe. I'd love to climb up there (but only when tied to a dock funny).
