Does anyone on this board work or dabble in electronic repair ?

My trusty VHF is NFG. (not functioning good) I believe the model is MTX-101 from Radio Shack. (This same radio was also sold under other label, but not sure which ones.)

Realizing that taking my VHF to a shop will be more expensive that taking it to a landfill, and giving the "saved" green to retailer for a new one; I'd like to try to repair this one myself.

Being a mechanical engineer, I can readily recognize that the smoke has not been let out of any of the componenets attached to the PC boards. I have power going into the unit, but haven't checked much beyond that at this point.

Does anyone Sam's Photo Facts for this radio? (if Sams are still used)

Thanks, in advance

It could be as many different things as there are components on the boards. I believe this is a handheld? Honestly, I'd say it has done its job well and it's time for a new one. I know that isn't what you asked.

Especially with a handheld, how certain are you that it isn't working? Is it not transmitting, not receiving, not powering on, all the above?

You could go through a standard troubleshooting sequence by verifying each stage - audio, oscillator, PA/mixer, receiver filter(s)... you'd need the schematic for it and some specialized tools. Or, you could go buy a new one. smile

I worked about 10 years as an electronics tech - but that was many moons ago.

Most stuff these days is unfortunately throw-away.

Thanks for all the replies.

The radio is actually mfg. by Uniden. (found their name on the PC board) I believe this type of radio is referred to as fixed mount mobile. The bracket is mounted in a convenient location, and 12V DC power to the wires, antenna & attach radio, and you're good to go.

The unit powers up, but has absolutely no audible output. I am going to procure a remote speaker over the w/e and try that. I have 5V DC across the speaker wires with it on, but as I say the speaker doesn't even crackle when powering up.

I have already bought a replacement unit, but would rather get this one operating again instead of just pitching it. It is a 1989 model unit, so it owes me nothing....If I fix it, I will mount it in my truck to monitor radio traffic at the loccal port.

I'll let you all know about the speaker.
