I have been using one of these all Summer

It's awesome. I think every boat should come with one from the factory. Makes docking much easier and allows for some intense tubing runs. Got mine on Ebay for around $40, it's the polished SS version.

That fits on the wheel, right? If not, what does it do?

These indeed are invaluable for docking. Especially backing into a slip as we do with our single screw boat.

Personally, I wouldnt spend $40. You can find these at your local farm supply store for $5. While not made out of shiney chrome or burlwood. Still as functional.

We used to call those "brodie knobs".

or 'suicide knobs'...

I could really used a pair for the houseboat, since I'm about 9 turns lock to lock with 20" diameter destroyer wheels!

WM wants $80?? mmmm...

I've had one on our boat for a number of years. Couldn't live without it now. Great for docking. I have the wood one that matches the wood dash of the boat almost perfect. The Edsons are very good quality. $40 is a good deal.

The surprising thing I really like about this product is the bearings. They have a double set of ball bearings, but rather than steel in the bearings, they have completely made corrosion a non-issue by making the ball bearings out of plastic.

I had one of those once ... on a 1950 Ford ... in 1959 ... in high school. Then, it was known as a Necker's Knob, so's you could steer (no power steering) with one arm around your GF, while she shifted the three-on-the-tree.

We have one on our boat Dave.
Love it for docking or in a following sea.

Cheap? NO! but American Made and is all about quality.

That's funny, one of my best friends said almost the exact same thing when he saw it. Only difference was that his was a 1950 Mercury and he graduated High School in '58. Otherwise the story was identical.

Geez Dave, your friend is old! A '50 Merc was a very cool car (then). Ask him if his, er, knob, had a little button that let it flip down flat.

Spending the weekend at his place. I'll try to remember to ask.

That '50 Merc of his was a convertible too... When he sold it in the 80s, he included a big crate containing every single OEM part that he had removed to cutomize it, in the trunk. The guy who bought it (to restore it) was so thrilled when he opened the crate, that returned a few days after the purchase and gave my friend another check for nearly as much as he'd paid for the car. Said it "was the only right thing to do".

Correctomundo. Once you get close to the dock you only use the shifters.
