Naugahyde is a popular, or once popular vinyl like fabric that is used for upholstery on boats. I had no idea they came from little animals, and I am glad to learn that the little buggers are not harmed in the manufacturing of marine upholstery.

The small chameleon-like animals known as Naugas™ have long been known as the source of beautiful and durable fabrics that look like fine, soft leather. And since Naugas shed their hydes without harm to themselves, the fabrics they help make came to be known as Naugahyde.

Interesting, I always thought it was synthetic since it wears so well.

Did you know that shellac comes from the shell of the Lac beetle? No synthetic material can match it's stain hiding ability. That's all the trivia I have today.

A friend of mine use to have a stuffed Nauga in his car. It was a promotional item given away by a furniture retailer years ago.

The dern think looked a bit like roadkill by the time he got it but it was kind of funny to toss around.

Several years ago, our neighbor's son moved home for a short while after getting out of the service. For some reason, he bought several odd vehicles which he kept at the neighbors for a while. One was a huge 50's or so car. The hood could hide 2 V-8s end-to-end and backseat was behind the back doors. The entire exterior of this vehicle was covered in Naugahyde. He also had a 60's model VW "microbus" somebody had cut the middle out of. The wheelbase was about 2'! It had to have wheelie bars on the back

I knew a guy in college who had ranched Naugas growing up. Could tell you anything you wanted to know about them.
