The first gasoline engines, fitted with a catalytic converter for leisure boats, have arrived. Volvo Penta is launching four catalyzed sterndrive models and one catalyzed Volvo Penta IPS gasoline model. The engines have very low emissions and satisfy California CARB 4 star requirements, the toughest gasoline emission regulation in the world.

Finally catalytic for boats. 20 years late? I'm happy the emissions regulation will finally be more strict in the coming years.

I'm a little disappointed in Volvo's offering. With all the "new" engine technologies VVT, direct injection, they could have offered for higher HP and lower emissions. I guess we will have to wait another 20 years.

New lineup:
Engine Prop shaft output Config. Displacement

3.0 GXiC 112 kW / 150 hp Straight 4 3.0 liter
5.0 GXiC 201 kW / 270 hp V8 5.0 liter
5.7 GiC 224 kW / 300 hp V8 5.7 liter
8.0 GiC 298 kW / 400 hp V8 8.1 liter
IPS550G 298 kW / 400 hp V8 8.1 liter

Seems like they're only offering the cat system in the more popular engines? No 4.3Gl/GXi, 5.7GXi, 8.1GXi. Is this temporary?

They bumped 15 hp on the 3.0GXiC from the 3.0GL and bumped 25hp on the 8.1GiC from the 8.1Gi. Or is this more inline with their true hp of before? Similar to what they now rate the 5.7Gi at 300hp this year and the next 5.7GiC. Interesting...

Must be lighter with aluminium exhaust risers coated with titanium ceramic both inside and outside. About time they replace cast iron.

Looking good.

The reason that there is no cat system for the 4.3 is that that particular block will be phased out by GM within the next couple of years. I thought that the 8.1 (496) was phasing out too, but I see that they are offering a cat version, so maybe it's going to stick around for a while.

Is that where the cat lives, at the top of the riser? Seems like it's kinda close to the intake/fuel rail etc. I wonder how that will affect things. How have they addressed the extra heat under the engine hatch? Or is that up to the boat maker to figure out?

Volvo Penta utilizes double walls in the exhaust system. The cooling water flows between the walls, thus cooling the outside of the exhaust system while the catalytic converter is able to operate at the required high temperature. Sensors also measure the temperature and adjust engine cooling as needed

So if I'm seeing the drawing right there must be two cats? It looks as if there is water mixed with the exhaust after the top of the riser so the cat must be in the front of the manifold? Maybe it's just a poor drawing and not representative of what's really going on.

Didn't know about the 4.3. I had forgotten about the 496 (8.1) phasing out in 2010. GM confirmed it a short while ago. That is strange for Volvo to offer it.

I'm very surprised on the size of the CAT system. Looks like a nice installation.

Still wondering how long the 8.1 will survive after GM stops production ??

Wondering if VP makes a system similar to Merc's DTS system ??

They sure tucked all that into a small package. I hope that it performs for longevity. Someday I'll have a drive with a catylitic converter but that will be a few years away and hopefully they'll have the kinks worked out by then!

Capt Morgan,

Looks like the EVC is not for I/O packages from what I can see / read. I believe now that someone told me that Volvo was coming out with EVC for I/O packages "soon" after your reply.
