Have a small scratch in gray gel coat. Is it something you touchup like paint. I believe I can purchase it from Bryant to match. Do you need to sand or polish to blend ? Thanks

Go to spectrumcolor.com to get the small repair gelcoat paste. They are good at matching the color on your boat model. Very easy to apply and sand.

Sand the scratch to rough up the repair areas. Follow Spectrums instructions for mixing the gelcoat with the hardner. Apply to the scratch. After it cures, start with 220 grit to form the new area to be level with the existing. Yes, you will be sanding the area around the scratch too. Then wetsand using 400 grit, 600 and for best results, use the 1000 grit at the end. Polish then wax.

What waterwing said . . .

It is more like jello mold than paint. Using clear plastic (like the book report cover material) over the repair area will get you a good finish and starting with the 400 or 600 grit sandpaper instead of the 220.

Often the gelcoat repair kit come with some of the clear plastic. but usually not enough for second and third applications.

Keep in mind that repairing a scratch is different than repairing a crack. Repairing a crack involves grooving out the crack along with a few other steps.

More of the consistency of peanut butter hardening as it gets cold.

In any case, make sure you apply enough to build up the surface, so you can then sand it down even, progressing to funer grits as mentioned above.

Tips: Water spray bottle works nice for wet sanding. Go slow and let the paper do the work. Maybe even lask off the surrounding area to limit its exposure to the sanding.

Sound difficult, but really fairly easy (especially for the patient types - which I'm not!)
