First off, no matter how intelligent you are, or think you are, you should not be responsible for calls about things like this, long distance. If he did not know for certain, he should have talked to a dealer.
Second, Ford has always, to my knowledge, been very good about marking flex fuel vehicles to separate them from the run of the mill models. Besides the side markers and fuel cap markings, they also came with a flex fuel supplemental guide.

Second, Ford has always, to my knowledge, been very good about marking flex fuel vehicles to separate them from the run of the mill models. Besides the side markers and fuel cap markings, they also came with a flex fuel supplemental guide. It was my fault (hence the thread!). I started it, I figured it out. 18 months or so ago, the family was on our way to Kansas City in the Tahoe, and I was driving. The tank was nearing empty so I pulled into a gas station that happened to sell E85. I happened to know the Tahoe had a flex-fuel 5.3 from the option sheet on the window when they purchased it. So, after a quick explanation of what E85 was, I got the green light to fill the Tahoe up with it. It performed as expected. Last year when Bob started this new job with the 2005 Ford, he called and asked if his truck could run E85. I looked it up online and found no 2005 F-150 were E85 capable. I did note that 2006's was a compatible. I passed this information along to him. When he picked up the 2006 truck, he called and asked if it was E85 compatible. I told him I would check again to make sure. Pulled up the database and sure enough, many 2006's F-150's with 5.4L's were compatible. He asked me again over the past weekend, so I looked it up ONE more time. Green light. Well, I was culprit. I should have known better to ask for the VIN number to quadruple check. So, when the problem came, naturally he turned to me. Better explained? Hope so. All is well now. Phew!
