Hey chuck others who make this trip. After a 9 month illness I am able to make this trip. We are planning for the second weekend in September. Catalina is our current base location unless the fishing is still better further south. Have any of you used cabrillo beach launch. My understanding this is the most direct route without having to spend allot of time clearing the different bays. There will be 3 adults and 1 12yo on my 260 dancer. For anchoring off cat do i need to increase my rope length to 300'? We are planning to bring extra gas and water from home to avoid the high cost of you Californian tax's. I would like to hear how each of you provision you boats for this type of trip as my double check. Thanks guys. idn

"For anchoring off cat do i need to increase my rope length to 300'?"

If I were you, I'd want AT LEAST 300' of rope and 15' or so of chain for the main anchor. I believe you can safely anchor in up to 50' with that. You should be able to find anchorage in this or less depth, but may need to anchor in as much as 70'+.

I'd also consider a second anchor for stern or back-up.

Where are you planning to launch from the mainland? Hope you have a good time and take pictures. smile

Yes we are going to make the crossing. Looking to launch from cabrillo beach as it seems to the most direct route but hoping on some some input on that choice?? Thanks HF for your thoughts. thumb

We usually launch out of Cabrillo when we go. Close to fast water. It is expensive though. I think we end up paying around $45-50 fro Friday evening until Sunday late morning/afternoon. Davies is cheaper and they have wash downs where Cabrillo does not.

Hey Loren - 2nd weekend in September (6th-7th) is the US Outrigger Championship race. From Newport Beach to Catalina on Saturday, and back on Sunday. So, I'll be busy that weekend. Love to do it later in the month! Never launched from Cabrillo, always use Davies in Alamitos Bay. Not sure if I understand "anchoring off Cat". Do you mean Cat's harbor on the far side of 2 Harbors? There's lots of moorings & protected anchorages available from Avalon to White's Landing. Check with the Avalon harbormaster. Need 8:1 scope when anchoring; two (bow & stern) are better than one. Heading over to Avalon today - doing an appraisal in Hamilton Cove.

I used the South Shore Launch Ramp across the L.A. River from the Catalina Express Landing. Shortest crossing from breakwater to Long Point, but a couple nm inside the harbor. Upside, you get to see the Queen Mary on the way to Queen's Gate and they have a wash-down. It cost $10/night.

I might be interested in September 26-29?

You could rent an EPIRB from BoatUS. Also, don't forget to file a float plan with somebody at home.

So that makes all your costs of motoring on over there tax deductible. Sweet!

After reading some of the other post I think it would help for you all to know what I have. This a 260 sundancer with genset, radar, gps, and depth, radio with dsc. I have a complete ditch bag with first aid, water, complete distress system with additional hand held radio and flares, smoke and gun. I carry 85 gallons of gas, 40 gallons of water, and have a 20 gallon holding tank. I have storage racks for 8 rods along with 8 rod holders. I have installed a live well under my rear facing seat and will be lashing 3 large ice chests to the bow gunrails, one for food and 2 for ice for the fish we catch. For this trip to help with space for fishing I have taking down two of the three Bimini and removed the rear seat along with the snap in carpet. I know I am still forgetting something but I have been planning this fishing trip for a couple of years.

Items I still need:
1. fuel flow for my lowrance lms 520c.
2. 300' anchor rope.
3. ?????? usa2

Well so far it looks like we will launch late 9-11 or early 9-12 from Davies and more then likely moor at Catalina harbor on the back side. Talked with the harbor folks and its allot flatter and easy to get a mooring and its closer to the kelp for us and we are still looking to cross over to Santa Barbara one morning and its only a 10 minute walk to the isthmus. We will be coming back the 14th. thumb

HEY guys! Been delinquent in posting this month. I was on the water yesterday (Sat) for the Dana Point outrigger race. What a day! The start line was outside the Dana harbor entrance, then northwest along the coast to the turn buoy just offshore of main beach at Laguna Beach. Lots of boats anchored, fishing, playing in the water. I was tempted to stop & hang out for the rest of the day. But racing continued back down the coast to the finish. 22 miles in all . . . twice. Once for the women & coeds in the morning and again for the men in the afternoon. A 12 hour day on the water.

SO - Catalina . . . Loren - your weekend won't work for me, but deepv you mentioned the last weekend in September. That might work out.

Anyone interested in participating in the Outrigger championships as an escort skipper? Sept 6-7; pay is $400-500. Not sure if they're still looking for boats . . . click here:

http://www.socaloutrigger.org/champs/

Keep me posted on Catalina. I've never been to Cat Harbor. What's the distance from Two Harbors by water?

Someday I'd love to cruise to Little Harbor & camp on the hook. What a pretty spot!

Deep - yeah, appraisal expenses are a write-off; gas, mooring, golf cart rental, food . . . :-)

No we are leaving Thursday afternoon and plan hitting the bait barge by midnight and heading for 10 miles south of the island( none locally as the 152 fathoms along the avalon bank) for first light fishing then we will head into Avalon for ice and misc, then head back around the east side of island. We have changed from cat harbor to little harbor, there is no moorage there but a soft sand bottom and a sandy beach for night fishing. thumb
