hey, I think I might have to re-power my Grady next summer and I was curious about the pricing of a used 4 stroke or E-Tec. I'd probably want to stay away from Mercury -

Also, ,currently I have a 175 2 stroke - what can I get away with where a 4 stroke is concerned for the equivelant of a 2 stroke 175? My understanding is that 4 syroke are of better performance than the 2's...

Performance-wise, a 2-stroke will always have the edge over a comparable-horsepower 4-stroke. i.e. a 175hp 2-stroke will have a lot more torque and at lower rpms than a 175hp 4-stroke.

A 175hp 2-stroke will also weigh less than a 175 hp 4-stroke.

4-strokes have other things going for them; quiet, smooth, umm, quiet, smooth...

Thanks - so if I replaced my 175 2 stroke with a 150 4 stroke, I would have less power? I should stay with the 175 then, no?

Yes.

Yamaha F200 (don't see a 175 in their lineup) 583 lb.
Suzuki DF175 483 lb. (lighter than most 4-strokes)
Honda 150 (2.3L) 485 lb.
Honda 200 (3.4L) 588-610 lb.
E-Tec175 (2.6L) 418-433 lb. depending

Boat tests on the Suzuki site: http://www.suzukimarine.com/sr_08/df175-150/boat_tests/

I'm sure there are some comparison tests 2 v. 4 stroke out there on the web - maybe even for your hull? Popular Mechanics, Trailer Boats, etc. As well as on each of the motor websites - didn't have time to look.
