It never fails just before we go on vacation every year something around the house or car always decides to quit!

Couple years back it was a pipe it decides to rot out and leak from upstairs 10 minutes before we walk out the door. Had to shut the water off to the house!

Another time the back door decides to warp from some rain (Never happened before!)and had to rig it while we were gone.

Pulling the van out from the garage a few days before leaving for vacation the ABS pump/valve was shot and rear brakes were bad

This year the Pool pump assy. decided to fry and burn up last night! Had to order another for a mere $333.00!Delivered. Best price i found! Of course it was from Florida! Most places wanted 400+
Local guys wanted 425-475 plus tax and still had to order it!

The pump will show up AFTER we leave so friend will drive from Battle Creek to re-plumb it and install it for me! Now I just pray the water does not turn in the 4-5 days it takes to get here!!

i wonder how many people come home to a house with a foot of water on the inside
that thought makes me nervous but i still haven't remembered to shut my water off more then once or twice when going on vacation

That sounds like good planning for a change. 12 pack of beer for the plumber and all is well

Every year I say I'm going to shut the water main off, but I don't think I've ever remembered to do it.

I always turn off the washing machine valve. I have those stainless burst proof lines but they don't say anything about the washer valve or fittings failing! Our washer and dryer are upstairs with the bedrooms. So any burst, all 3 floors would be toast!
Also I always turn the hot water heater down to vacation.
Turn/leave the A/C on and set it at 78deg. Keeps the house smelling nice.
We don't stop the mail since we have people here most days watching the dogs and using the pool.
Sheesh so much to do...Why do we go away again

We often fall victim to whichever cousin of Murphey it is that makes things break before vacation.

Basement,second and 3rd floor. Or two story with a basement It would run down all the way to the basement! Wow could you imagine the mess!

I guess you just need to stop taking vacations

Wow. We had just bought our new house, and were still living in our old house. Almost decided to spend the night on the new futon we had just put together in the loft of the new house. Thank God we didn't. We arrived back at the old house about 10-15 minutes after a water pipe burst under the kitchen sink. It's a really weird feeling to see water pouring out from under the door from the house to the garage as your pulling in. Pergo floors really do float! We even had an offer on the house, thankfully she was ok with her brand new kitchen floor .

If you turn the water off and you have a water softener shut that off also. Does not work to well with the water off.

You and Justification should not be allowed in the same state together...

Seriously, we get a couple calls a year from people that come home from vaca only to find something broke and flooded the house. I have seen the "water funning out the front door." Not pretty.

Had one several years ago where a stool tank on the 3rd floor was cracked. No one new it. People left for a week, stool tank breaks the rest of the way, water runs down through 3 floors and into the basement. Ugly, real ugly.

Do all yourselves a favor and shut your water off when you leave for extended periods of time. Turn water heaters off too, so they aren't firing against a closed valve.

Problems just before vacation are there just to make you appreciate the time away that much more...

That is what we keep our house at when we are home.


We turn off the water main, turn off the water softener, turn off the boiler as that heats our water and no need to burn oil heating water we aren't using.

Knock on wood, we are leaving tomorrow for Raystown so far so good.

the day that we were leaving for Fla last year I went downstairs to get a shirt and saw water on the floor. at first I thought it was the condensate pump or tube, but it turned out that the water heater baffle rusted loose and ruptured the tank.
we have two inline so I just valved it off and we left - after I turned the main to the house off.

Course, as soon as we landed back in MN, I had to catch a plane to portland. My dad went over and replumbed the tanks and got it running for the admiral..

That could have been bad. You may have been a new owner of an indoor pool!!

All of our problems happen on or around holidays...

We used to have problems around the holidays as well, LL. Now I tell the relatives to stay home and no more problems.

We love our family, but it is amazing how quiet and peaceful the holidays are with just the four of us....

All is well, got home about two hours ago!
The pump was put in on Wednesday while we were gone and the pool is as clear as ever! Just needs a good vacuum!
