Anyone know the tow rating of truck/cars that get Gov. ratings above 35 mpg highway?

Above 30 mpg?

Above 25 mpg?

My car is rated at 28 highway and will easily achieve that, I usually get 30 to 32. Tow rating is 3500#.

That sounds like the tail trying to wag the dog...

When looking for a tow vehicle for my boats, I am more concerned with towing capacity, torque, HP, braking system and the transmission versus the fuel mileage.

But then again, I have the need for a true tow vehicle, not a trendy vehicle that claims to be able to tow PWC's.

But as the MFG's say, "there's an azz for every seat"...

I have noticed an increase in crash reports involving smaller/lighter tow vehicles while they are in the process of towing boats and/or travel trailers.

Yup, those ones are all rated to haul your butt and the butt of the passenger sitting next to you.

On a more serious note, my neighbor has a VW turbo diesel, whopping 90hp, that he tows a pair of jet skis with 180 miles to the Colorado River.

2 jet skis + trailer, maybe 1400 lbs?

Not to mention he probably gets 40+ MPG with on the highway!

My truck is not rated, but gets over 20 easily on the highway. We managed to average 22 MPG on our last trip including going through the smokey mountains (Chicago to Ocean Isle Beach, NC).

No, i haven't towed with it. The only trailer we have is the boat, and that is well beyond its capabilities. I don't even have a tow hitch on it, not sure how it would fit with the rear plastic being so low.

As for handling the weight, I think the car would have no problems up around 3000#. The turbo engine holds 258ftlbs of torque flat from 1900 to 5000 rpms, while not incredible, it is a decent amount for a car. The brakes on the car are really second to few. The year my car was made (2002) there were supposedly only two vehicles that had better 80-0 stopping distances, one was a Ferrari and the other an AMG. But I do have the Aero model which features larger rotors. The rest of the car is quite stout, I don't think there would be much issue mechanically. All of my issues with the car have been electrical or maintenance caused, and light bulbs, lots of light bulbs. And the car is fairly heavy.

We had a '98 TDI, last year of that body and first year back with a diesel. It would easily achieve 48-50 mpg. That old claim of 710 miles on a tank of fuel wasn't far from the truth when on the open highway.
That car was rated I think for 2000#, but it was a different car then.

Sorry for the de-rail.

I am hearing the "hwy" milage is not that much better than the non-hybrid. Do you know about the "city" real life milage?
