Phooey on "gallons per HOUR". I don't know who ever started that nonsense for measuring gas usage of things that move, but that's just what it is, a nonsense measurement... I mean, I have a great big boat, and at "cruise speed" I'm only burning 3 to 4 gallons an hour! WOW, how great is that! Why, I know boats that go thru 20 gallons an hour, how do they afford to use the thing?? Do the math-- My boat only went 7 miles in that hour, while the gas hog went 40 miles... umm---exactly the same gas mileage. Now, if you're talking say, GENERATORS, then gee, measuring their use by gallons per hour makes sense! ---They don't GO anywhere!

Our boat won't idle below 800 rpms, and hardly moves at all in idle. It need 1,000 rpms or more to really "idle". There was one time in a 15mph headwind that the boat went backwards at 800rpm idle.
I know a 1999 Merc 7.4 MPI idles at 750rpms with a B1 drive because I've driven it. Not necessarily true that ALL BB's idle that fast, but it is in at least one instance.
So, I think 550/650rpms in idle might be a little optimistic. It also depends on the propping of the boat. Dual prop drives seem to have lower idle speeds because less energy is wasted, thus hull speeds are greater and lower RPMS.
A boat powered by a 5.7L is not going to have the same prop/gears as the same boat with a 7.4L. In idle, the 7.4L boat is going to move faster, assuming the same idle speeds.
I think GFC's 1400 number is a telling argument. It's not really the engine speed as much as it is the hull speed that determines the MPG factor.
GFC, if you do not mind me asking, how fast was your boat going at 1,000 rpms? 1,400 rpms?
What I am wondering is if GFC's hull speed at 1,000 rpms or 1,400 rpm is similar to Seabuddy's old 268 with the 496 at 550/650rpms.
Sorry, I am probably over analyzing this, but it does arise my curiosity.
