Has anyone figured out a way to effectively remove scratches from gps/ chartplotter without making it worse? I've contacted raymarine--wondering if its even possible to just buy new glass? Solutions welcome!! thanks

If they are actually scratches, I doubt you can remove any of them.

I think it was cleaned with paper towel. So it has quite a glare/ swirls, etc if you're not working head on-- (and my gps is to the side unfortunately). There seems to be a glass (or plastic) screen that is scratched about 1/4" thick-- I'm wondering if anyone has ever managed to remove that and just cut a new piece of glass?

It's not glass as we know it, therefore, I don't think it'd be worth the time and effort to try and replace just the display on the unit -- if that would even fix the problem, without creating others. I don't recall seeing any kits that would remove scratches, like you describe.

You should check with RayMarine. They have a repair service, while a bit on the expensive side, you essentially get a new unit.

One of the members here a few years ago - cannot remember who - twisted the connector off the back of his fishfinder, chartplotter, or something.

After looking to replace the connector, he finally just sent it in to the RayMarine repair facility. His unit was out of warranty, and I think they had a flat rate repair fee - I dunno, $250, something like that.

But he essentially got back a new, or at least, completely refurbished unit.

If you are gonna try something like removing and replacing the glass, which might end in disaster - might just as well have it repaired by RayMarine.

RayMarine makes or recommends a screen cleaner, but it might be too late for that:

Try a bit of RainX on it. RainX essentially fills in any imperfections in the glass with a clear substance.

I've found it works on sunglasses so it maybe worth a shot.

I've used this successfully on plastic headlights, taillights and watches.

Raymarine sent me an email and they can fix it. Not sure of the price-- I'll try some things and probably send it to them once the season is over.

If the unit is out of warranty, they publish a flat-rate charge schedule by model number on their web site.

Another of the plastic cleaners that works well at making scratches less apparent is Plexus. You can check it out here:
