Better question, what would happen if all of teh foriegn companies pulled their money out of the US...

And honestly, if it is pubically owned, the profits go to the shareholders. So where do GM's profits go, or Citibanks? And so on and so on...

The only exception would be allowing 4 of those hours for getting an education.

The Oklahoma Penal system used to feed and cloth nearly 100% the inmates. The had large farms and feed pen operations. They also bought cloth and made the prison garb. Was this considered "Cruel and Unusual"?
Many of the prisoners wanted the work detail as it got them outside doing something. A form of disciple would be to remove an inmate from the farm detail.

Why can this not be implemented today? Of course not all inmates can be put on this detail as the escape risk is higher.

To get this back on track, maybe they could start a prison brewery.

I miss understood the intent. I thought the idea was "free" or "mandatory" labor (aka no monitory compensation to the inmates) to be sold on the open market.

My bad.

That's Shawshank Redemption, D-Rod. And a great movie it is too!

I think they still do it to an extent, but Big Mac is in a crises and too many of the newer places do not allow such things since they are run by private companies. The problem is that we are do short term planning for a long term issue. The short term solution is to build more prisons and spend more money to incarcerate criminals. Long term solution is to build a large number of facilities that can be used as needed for a multitude of issues. Inexpensive metal buildings in remote areas. Near military bases where possible. Also near national parks and state parks. Electronic controls as mentioned. Then attack the base issue. Take children away from risky homes. Stop wholesale foster homes and any foster homes has to meet strict standards. Our children need to be raised to believe in self determination and themselves. If we make sure that the kids are not getting into gangs and are getting a good education, half the battle is won.
