Some of you may remember when we changed the name of the Party Cruiser. Only 2 hours after doing so, we decided to trailer the boat to go get gas & water. And I punctured a pontoon log with one of the trailer guides, requiring a $700 trip to the aluminum welders shop...

Check out this tragic story... Very sad. And they just barely re-named their boat. The ultimate irony is what they named it...

I'm thinking maybe we should leave well enough alone... frown

Be careful on the water, and be careful while towing, please!

Bad Carma is all I've ever heard about name changes.

Is that legal with an SUV in Utah?

Yes, but there is a length limit, 56' or something, I'm not even sure. I used to tow my motorcycle on a snowmobile trailer behind a 21' travel trailer, with a Ford Custom van...

The first trailer needs to be a fiver and you need a modified class A license to do that in California.

Tragic story.
And sorry to hear of your pontoon log as well.
But I'm not superstitious like that. If you don't feel comfortable about changing the name, I don't blame you. But I wouldn't give it a second thought. Fact is, I'm considering a name change for our boat as well. I also have no problems takeing bananas on board.

I am superstitious also. That's why my boat's name is still "It's Me Again" which is what my parents named it when they bought it new in 2001. It's a Ray Stevens reference and my mom's name is Margaret, of course.

Tragic!
600 feet to come to rest! How fast could that be? Seems like a long way for a roll over! But with that load I suppose it could be pushed until it broke loose. looks to be a 3/4ton Suburban should be able to handle the load.

A 2WD 3/4Ton Suburban has a 9,700lb (9,300lbs for a 4x4) towing capacity.

Minus cargo, people on board, etc.

It is legal in Knasas, but with conditions.

The lead trailer must have sway controlls and the rear trailer must have brakes.

Then we have a 65' limit.

Oh dear that is really sad. Prayers to the family.
LBS

And FR, I wouldn't be changing the name of the boat. Even though I liked the new name you had.

D-Rod, I checked the Chevrolet web site on 2008 models.

9000 or 12000, either way it does not sound like a combination I would like to tow with. Once that whipping action starts a 1/2 or 3/4 ton is going to be hard pressed to control. I would think you would have much more sway with two trailers.

Might be okay with a duelly and reduced speed.

So so sad frown ... my heart goes out to that family.

Ironic timing to hear this story...we are getting to spend 3500k+ miles in our sport utility...family of 4 plus the dog.
We won’t be towing anything... but this is a good safety reminder for us.
Anything can happen.

Personally, I don’t think it is the right time to break down their towing capacity – that will come in time.

This story also reminded me of our scariest instance...
Last year we were towing over one of the bay bridges.
Around the hump of the bridge, we noticed a disabled vehicle in the break-down lane.
I decided to move from the first lane to the third lane to give plenty of room.
Just after we passed the broken car, I decided to move back in to the second lane.
Just as I started over, I looked in the mirror and saw an 18 wheeler barreling down in the second lane. It seemed to come out of nowhere.
My evasive action was a quick move back into the third lane. That sent the truck & boat into what I would call a roll. I am probably making it sound worse than it was – but it felt like the whole rig was shaking like a dog in slow motion, 3 or 4 times.

None of said anything for ~5 seconds, then my youngest stated crying.
That turned in to the rest of us cheering her up and saying everything was OK.
I put on a nice cover, but I was shaken up myself.
BTW, this all happened at ~75mph. We drove a little slower for the rest of the day.

Accidents can happen w/ or w/out towing & w/ or w/out operating within your tow capacity.

And FR, I love the new name and design – but I would keep things just the way they are wink
