Man, I hope my washer and dryer last for a while longer; I've been shocked at the high prices of the newer front loading washers and the matching dryers. WOW bug_eyes. My Kenmore top loader is now 20 years old and has only had to be repaired once for the board that controls the temp. Dryer (knock wood) still is chugging along. It has gotten a lot of use since our HOA doesn't allow clothes lines.

We just did the new Washer Dryer thing. I wanted Front loading, but the wife refused to pay extra for stands to put a front loader at a height that makes the front loading practical. We just got the GE Profile Top Loading HE Washer and Dryer. The Washer and Dryer are actualled wired together so that the Washer tells the dry what it just washed and how to set its settings to dry. Washing takes 50-60 minutes, but the expensive 220 drying now only takes 30 minutes or less. The washer has no agitator so you can get a huge amount of clothes in it and the dryer handles the huge loads no problem. You also don't get vibration issues with a top loader that you get with front loader. The old top loaded would go off balance a couple times a week. Over a month on the new Washer and not a single out of balance load.

Boatless, but shopping.

Good luck with that GE equipment. rolleyes

My wife swore off their stuff a few years ago, and I recently overheard two ladies at work declaring the same thing... eek

We had a washer and dryer set that ran for a bit 3-4 years, but when it required service, the appointment wait times were unreal... shocked mad

Had to make some Laundomat visits waiting on them, like my old college days....

When they broke again, that was that....Got the Kenmore Front Loader Set I mentioned earlier, and havent looked back...

We also bought the LG front load washer and dryer. Works great. Uses very little water and drys the clothes quick.
Use the correct laundry detergent. Has to HE or you will have suds everywhere. Don't ask me how I know this.

Thanks Mark, got the same advice from someone at school with the same setup, admiral picked up the mega bottle at Costco last time she was there. It does over 200 loads!

thumbs up for front loaders! we went with a Bosch (the best!) and noticed a couple of things - one, wash cycles take much longer (when it's really packed with clothes, less time with less clothes though), BUT, since we're washing about 4x more clothes per wash then the old top loader, it's actually faster.

also, we can now wash our king size comforter and basically anything else.

the front loader uses barely any water at all, which with the cost of water in Monmouth, IL - is a terrific thing!

lastly, this Bosch unit has such an extreme spin cycle, the clothes are nearly dry before they even hit the dryer.

So to sum up: more clothes washed at one time, less water used for the wash and less electricity used with the dryer. Gotta love that.

Oh yeah, I think we got our unit for around $700 from Lowes.

We've not had the problem yet, but I've read about it in reviews. We leave the door open when not in use, it's conveniently sprung to stay open unless you latch it.

I think the early Maytags (Neptune?) had that problem.

ONe of the warnings that I received when we bought our Kenmore. No musty/mildew/staleness problems with ours, door closed.

Run a wash with vinegar and leave the door open after to dry. Should be ok.

forgot to mention the musty smell issue - all we do is leave the door open for a few hours after a use, the inside dries out, and no musty smell at all

let inside dry = no problems

From previous post, this is what we do, maybe will help?

Some front loads have an issue w/ mildew forming on the lower area of the inner door seal b/c water and moisture can sit there. We have a drain hole in the rubber gasket and check it every so often to make sure it is clear. I also rigged up a little bungee cord from the shelf next to the washer and we simply place the hook over the lip of the door to hold it open when the washer is not in use. Kinda silly, but it lets the interior dry. With top loads you could leave the lid up, with the front load ours swings shut on its own.

I'd stay away from anything Kenmore. We had 3 of 5 Kenmore Elite appliances fail within 1 month of purvchase...and Sears service SUCKS! Our GE dryer was defective out of the box too, and the washer seems overly complicated. LG stuff is getting good reviews, and it seems to be a good value, but I have no idea on their service. I'm leery of service on a brand that markets everything from washers to TV's though.
