of things that they own, and take a short cut to solve a problem, this is what happens...

I knew that we were going to need to do some work on the camper and I also new that it had some previous water damage. I knew that the "cap" sides werea little on the TLC side but I did not know that they were, esentially non existant..

I took the cap off the camper after I noticed that the sides were starting to come apart from each other and what I found was that the aluminum cladding was the only thing keeping the top on.
(if you own one of these and decide to do this, be advised to take care in securing the spring loaded armatures - they are under tension when its in the down position.. I now know this..and it was a close call)

any way, heres what I found..

In this pic, there is litterally NO wood behind the cladding..

I have it all apart now and am starting to get it back together, hopefully for the weekend coming up..

more to come..

keepin mind that I knew things were wrong with it and I knew that I was going to need to work on it AND, that I am NOT upset about this at all..

Definitely a common problem on older popups.

Have you also checked underneath on the flooring?

BTW - we saw an older popup on our vacation trip that must've had several tenting problems. The owners and raised the roof, removed all the tenting and closed in the "box" with roof tin. No bunkends, just the box, roof and tin in between. I'm guessing they just towed it like a TT with roof in raised position. Not sure what amenities they had in the little 7 X 10 (or 12) ft box.

this thing has been taken apart before, the trim on the top was cut on one side and you would not believe the amount of caulking that was applied to various areas like corners.

the floor is in great shape!! there will be some other areas that I will work on in the winter but not that big of a deal. the top is what I was the most worried about cuz the arms on it were cuttin holes in the aluminum and just flopping around.

that sounds like the ol hillbilly special!!!

When putting it together, use butyl/putty tape and Dicor self-leveling RV caulk. There's also a product called Eternabond which is a tape product that is supposed to stick to anything.

For the seams, trim, exterior hardware (latches, etc).

For ceiling...a friend bought an $300 TT that he leaves on some undeveloped property. He bought that fabric type covered paneling similar to what comes in RV's now and nailed it on to replace ceiling from water damage.

I know of what you speak, I was thinking about glueing a new piece of 1/4" panel back up as I stripped it clean down to the foam board. what ya'll think about an adheasive for that so that it dont sag?
