I've been spending the week at the lake. Seems alot of people been buying scooters as I have passed a number of couples buzzing along on the shoulder of the road. So....two scooters (at $1500 a piece) at 50 mpg / vs the family sedan for travel at 25 mpg. Seems like a toss up to me....and you could take the pooch along on the trip and carry your groceries with the sedan....no? pc

I'm thinking the answer has nothing to do with saving gas and everything to do with "enjoyment". After all, do we "need" to go boating?

wink

We use our scooter for short errands that do not require bringing the dog along. It is a blast to ride, and economical.
I took it to the store last night, and bought a loaf of bread, 1/2 gall of of milk. a dozen eggs, and a pack of hot dog buns.
It all fit in the storage compartment under the seat.

Indirectly, the money we save not driving the car for an errand like that, over time, will help a little bit on saving gas , as well as wear and tear on the car. Our daughter, who is out of school for the summer, rides it every day. It gives her some independence, and saves us time and gas to haul her around to her friends' and to the beach when she wants to go.

Like FR said, it's the enjoyment of riding in the open air that makes it worth owning one. We love our Zuma.

We also take the scooter to the marina when we go, and use it there as well. What we have saved on gas with the scooter, will not get me much gas in the boat, but every little bit helps. I see nothing wrong with "this picture" wink

Hey KK. They're closer to 100mpg than 50mpg. The higher gas prices go, the greater the savings. smile

Except, when a family is running two of them, then there 100mpg is cut down to 50 mpg.....

You wanna know what's wrong with this picture? I'll tell you what's wrong with this picture! It's in the wrong durn section! I was expecting to see a boat with a missing stern drive or one with a 500 lb guy and a super hot model type chick on board (and listing sharply to port). Or maybe a boat using granny knots to hang the fenders. I don't know.

But I was expecting to see a picture and it involve a BOAT!!!!

Sheesh. Where's my medicine?

Any money saved (and the joy from it) will quickly disappear when the Highway Patrol shows up to take the fatality report...

Since it's my line of work (LE), I've seen too many two wheeled vehicles taken out by bigger, heavier vehicles through no vault of the two wheeler to want to drive one on our roads.

Off-road, yes, but on-road, well, not for me.

I don't care how much I'd save in fuel costs...

Good luck!

One of the things I'm looking forward to after retirement is becoming Snow Birds down in AZ. GW's mother has a condo in Sun City West, outside Phoenix. In SCW you can drive golf carts on the streets. We'll be parking the car in the garage and tooling around in an electric cart.

Since we'll only be spending about 4 months a year down there, we'll just have an older, cheapie car to drive when we need to go a longer distance and use the golf cart for daily running around.

The enjoyment factor will be much larger than the gas savings. thumb

Thanks for a point I haven't seen brought up since the scooter topics became popular lately.

With the heavy traffic and crazy drivers in Tampa (probably no worse than many other areas?) ... I would be taking my life in my hands driving a scooter.

Not sure if you were including motorcycles in your comments, but I would feel a little better on something bigger that follows normal rules of the road.

I see more and more scooters in traffic, on the edge of the streets & sometimes on sidewalks of our 6-lane streets.
When I see them, I keep them on my radar.
I just hope I never have a run-in with one – it would ruin many lives.
