You can not move the engine on its mounts enough to let the tool side in and out easily?

How is/was the boat stored when the work was done?

Brand and year of boat?

So the tool can not go in all the way to see if the drive is aligned or not?

The Gimbal bearing may be in backwards and it is not going in all the way. There is a round indentation on the outer flange and that should be pointing to the engine, not visible from the drive.

Check that the gimbal is installed properly, otherwise the drive will not go in all the way as you described.

Also, another possibility is that the alignment tool did not go all the way into the coupler. The alignment tool can be used to adjust the angle of the gimbal bearing slightly to gain better alignment.

Maybe it's just the splines on the input shaft that are not aligned with the splines on the coupler. I find that happens sometimes when I refit my VP drive and when it happens, the 1 1/2" gap sound about what I have.

Try putting the drive in gear and turning the prop shaft slightly, so the input shaft turns.
