120.8 gals of gas and the bill was $601.46.

This was at a marina. I did not fill the boat all the way up.

This might be the wrong Forum for Marina Gas, but I took a stab at it. Sorry.

Ouch! How long will that much gas typically last you?

I really just try to focus on the boating adventure. This year it will be costly, but, so far, its money well worth spending.

Here's a rough, not verified, scale that I tend to use for full tanks on my cruiser...

70 hours at 4 mph,

60 hours at 7 mph,

30 hours at 10-12 mph,

8 and 1/2 hours at 25-35 mph,

4 and 1/2 hours at about 45 mph

So, it varies alot. I do not run a fuel scan gauge.

Please do not multiple and divide my rough scale to get all kinds of intruputations (sp) of what my boat does or does not do; its what scale or chart that I keep in my mind to use, roughly, and not intended to be perfect. Example, I do not WOT much and doubt if the fuel burn is very correct. Same way with the 4 and 7 mph numbers, again, for example.

Even so I understand why you don't use WOT much.

I am still trying to find the "sweet spot" for my boat.

Its not so much that I don't want to spend the money, as much as it is that I'd like to run the boat the most efficiently.

I would like to put in a fuel monitor, but my engines have a funky fuel delivery system that most of the fuel flow metering systems won't work properly.

So until then, I guess I just need to make some long distance runs at a given speed and RPM and see what looks the best.

Well, its good milage at "Trawler" type speeds for my cruiser and more personal fun (at least to me and the Admral) at the higher speeds.

Maybe if gas gets even higher in price, we will slow down for just this year, and then speed back up for the other years of ownership of the boat.

I would not buy a boat based just... on this year's gas prices.

I would think 3000 RPM's with your props and weight of the boat, will yield the best compromise of cruising speed and fuel burn efficiency. But, I'm just guessing.

There might not be that much difference between 3,000 rpm, 3,500 rpms, and 4,000 rpms as far as fuel burn is concerned. But usually by 4,000 rpms the burn is going up quite a bit compared to 3,000 - 3,500 rpms.

Thanks for the post seabuddy.
Your numbers, along with Al’s recent post mentioning 70 gals in four hours...
it puts perspective on the fuel cost associated with a 30+ft boat.
(never mind other associated costs)

If there is one person that can figure it out - it is you Al grin

I and others try very hard to get some truths and real situations/numbers up on www.boatingABC.com

You are welcome.
