How can I tell if my boat is a left hand or right hand drive unit? The manual has different ways to adjust the cables depending on direction. My prop turns clockwise to drive the boat forward. Clockwise was determined by standing behind the boat and looking forward.

I'm thinking not such a stupid question at all.

I will be looking forward to hearing this answer. Sorry I can't provide it.

Welcome NealB.

I was told that a clockwise rotation to move forward was righthand, counterclockwise foreward is lefthand..
Maybe someone has more info... not sure this is correct..

I beleive that to be right hand drive. The way I understand it is the direction it turns when looking forward. Clockwise when looking at the prop from behind means right hand.

You should be able to see the stamp on the prop. Usually it will have RH or LH stamped on it.

You can question stupid, but you can never ask a stupid question.

I beleive the others are right in saying it is right hand. If you have an Alpha drive, they are typically stamped right on there with the drive ratio.

Will the number and the rotation be stamped on the outside of the drive? Whereabouts?

Mine is on a sticker on the upper section of the outdrive on the port side (possibly the starboard as well). Smaller type, probably like 16 or 18 font would be a reference.

The answer to the question "How to determine rotation direction?" is use your hands.

If you grab the rotating shaft with your hand, and your fingers "point" in the rotation direction, your thumb will "point" in the the direction of travel.

Which ever hand "works" determines the rotation.
