GM announced the Corvette ZR-1 will carry a sticker price of $105,000 including shipping charges and gas guzzler tax($1700)

Fully optioned , the car will run approx. $117,000. Dealers will most likely be asking more with the limited production run for one year of 2,000 cars.

Over on the Vette forums some are predicting 10-20% "market adjustment" (dealer mark-up).

When you consider that most cars in that "segment" are well over $250K...it makes sense.

I bet they sell every one of them.

Not yet. But if you want a 200mph+ point of view....watch the video:

Of course...its just a top speed run. For a look at it on the track, see:

CaptKevin,

You have my permission to pull the trigger on a garden variety C6. The base model Corvette is a he** of a performance buy. No apologies needed. In a comparo with the Audi and Ferrari in "who has the best V8?" - Road&Track earlier this year - they were questioned why not have included the Z06 instead? ....especially at the price of the competition?

Their point, the base C6 is THAT good. And gave the nod to the C6.

Oh, and I think the ZR-1 is very cool as well.

And if you want really good bang for the buck, Z06s are going for $10K under MSRP these days. That's a lot of performance for $60K.

I don't know much about the details of Vettes, so please, i'm expecting someone to hop in here and correct me quickly, if need be.

At any rate, I once read or someone once told me, that a new LS3 powered Vette is basically just a quick as a Z06, that the performance difference was basically insignificant.

?????anyone????

I think for the average guy on a track they would probably be pretty equal because the average guy isn't going to get to the limits of the standard vette, much less the Z06. Put a driver in the car and the Z06 is going to run away. It's not just power, but suspension and rubber also.

If you are talking 1/4 mile, they are probably pretty close, niether of them are good drag cars, not set up for it, but again when you get to HP numbers they have, a driver will make a difference.

You can pick up a previous generation Z06 for a song, granted it doesn't have the power the new Z06 does. But in the same thought as CMJ stated, the standard person won't use it to its capabilities anyway. Yeah, it is the previous style, but still as fast as a molested primate....

I wouldn't call it "insignificant", but the LS3 is a definite step up from the LS2 as far as specs. The C6Z is lighter, more powerful (HP and Torque) and has a better suspension and drive train.
I have not driven an LS3, but I would bet the C6Z would pull it by a length or two in the quarter....and eat it's lunch on the track.

Now, if your talking about a C5 Z06 (pre-2005), thats a different story.

That is kind of the dilema I'm suffering. I have found several very low mileage 2000 to 2004 vettes for very low 20's. One only had 12k on it. It is very tempting when you look at it is less than 1/2 of a new ride.

Other dilema is the Mustang GT. One of my best friends is service manager at a local ford dealer that does major performance work. He can hook me up with a brand new 08 Stang loaded w/leather, auto for about 5k off sticker. Then can assist me with what ever mods I desire. He has a 06 & it is really impressive.

A guy I know went in to buy a new Mustang last year and came home with an 04 Roush Conv with 6k miles on it they had on the used lot. Again, not as fast as say the GT500k, but way faster than common sense.

The Z06 is faster than a base C6 in a straight line, and has substantially better brakes and a dry sump, which are both nice things to have if you intend to track the car. Even the base C6 is really quick, but the ZR-1 is insanely fast. The Z06 falls somewhere in the middle. Either a C5 or C6 Corvette will handle substantially better than a Mustang.

** Hot Off The Press **

ZR1 posts 'Ring time of 7:26.4!

Quote:
Tadge J. Juechter, Corvette's chief engineer, announced this morning that Jim Mero, GM's development engineer, drove the ZR1 around the Nurburgring in 7:26.4. According to the GMNext blog, the run took place earlier this morning and that conditions were good on the track, with the exception of a strong headwind down the main straight. Mero mentioned that he felt there were a few places where he could have gone faster, although no details were provided about why and where.

Juechter makes it clear that the ZR1 that lapped the 'Ring was instock trim, with the exception of safety and communications equipment. As such, the ZR1 was wearing the same Michelin Pilot Sport 2s found on the production model, the chassis alignment and vehicle height were set to factory specs and the unmodified engine was running on pump gas.

The lap began with a rolling start – which falls in line with current industry practices – and the time was confirmed both through an electronic timing system and two hand-held stopwatches. The ZR1 team will be posting a video of their run when they return from Germany and we'll be keeping our eye out for it when it's online the week of July 7th.

As cool as the ZR1 is, for almost 100K less you can buy a 170 mile an hour Challenger SRT8 and be more unique. I know they aren't the same class car but 140K is a bit much. But chicks do dig vettes.

Video of that ZR1 lap: http://www.zercustoms.com/news/Corvette-ZR1-Nurburgring-Record-Video.html

Wow

I can't imagine driving a car close to flat out on that track, much less one that fast.

Holy G-skillet! That's insane. See how fast that thing gets from 55-100? I don't know if can get my car to get from 70 to 80 as fast it can launch that 55-100 shoot. And going around those turns at 70mph. Holy catfish.
