Odd but true, the Volvo 3.0/SX option on my boat is $400 cheaper than the 3.0/Alpha 1 option! Not quite sure why this is? Perhaps due to poorer pricing for Genmar when buying Merc product? This is a pretty consistent trait throughout the Four Winns product line.

Odd, since I consider any Volvo drive to be the equivalent of a Bravo. I owned an Alpha drive...I'll never do it again. My current Bay is a Volvo AQ series (pre-SX)and I absolutely love it. You can tell they designed the drive to be serviced and maintained by most mere mortals.

The Bravo series and Volvo drives series line up against each other based on the drive. All shift inside the upper gear case.

An Alpha is an older and cheaper drive. It shifts F-N-R inside the lower unit. In the bullet.

The pricing is often what kind of deal and how much mark-up a boat builder gets and wants.

The cone for the shifting gears is what defines the drive families.

I like the helm/gauge layout. However, since every 175 for the past few years is identical, I want mine different... I'll be making myself a new panel soon, done in blue anodized aluminum and a different layout to make room for an hour meter and maybe an extra "aux" switch or two...

I haven't looked at a 185 in a showroom in probably a year or more so I went to bayliner.com to check out the helm and guages. Here's what it looks like now.

http://media.channelblade.com/boat_graph...480_image11.jpg

Below is what my '05, 185 gauges looks like. I installed the Garmin Fishfinder 250C last year (got a great deal from Cabela's when Garmin discontinued that model) and it's running in display mode when I took this photo. I really like the new style steering wheel and it looks like they added an hour meter (or something - it didn't specify and I can't tell for sure) as well.

Looks like the price has gone up about $1,500 too. I paid just a hair over $13k for mine new back in '05. It's nothing fancy, got the 3.0L and I've never had a problem with that engine. I have 4 kids and we mostly go on day trips with a tube. Top speed around 41 (gps confirmed) with a 3-blade prop, about 38 with the current 4-blade, and no problems towing the tube. (Much slower of course!) I'm very happy with my 185.

The 185 is a much bigger boat than the 175, huh.

They are changing their image each year, boat by boat, as well as doing some updating.

Alittle tight and low to the water cockpit for a family, IMO.

Consider a boat when you look towards a PWC, too.

Often times, cheaper to buy, run and maintain too than a PWC or small jet boat.
