Having two pumps is a no brainer for me. When you really NEED a pump, two pumps are better than one, and you can't afford a failure.

I noticed that you put a pigtail in the drain hose by the thru-hull. I imagine this is to keep outside water from coming in. How important is it? Does it serve any other purpose?

He has since added water senseing switches to the system so that possibility has been eliminated. They are cheap and I highly reccomend you add a second switch.

Not a bad precaution. The stock switch shown (Rule-a-Matic Plus http://www.rule-industries.com/products/...d_283/index.htm) is of an enclosed design - no external flapper, so in theory can not be blocked closed by an errant hose or pad, although I'd think a plastic bag might do a number. The second pump I'll be installing (Rule 53s-3 http://www.rule-industries.com/files/model_51s-3.pdf) is automatic but does not have an internal float switch, but rather has 'computerized operation' which I take to mean a sensor, again unless the input gets clogged the switching should be un-hindered.

You got it, to keep outside water from coming in from splashes, or in the event the thru hull is slightly submerged (siphon break). I don't believe it serves any other purpose. The pigtail was called for by Rule in the installation instructions, by Pascoe in his write up, and was the way the stock pump was routed, so I was just following the crowd. ;\)

Updating links to pics. Too bad I couldn't edit the first post!

With the height difference between the pump and the top of the loop near the thru hull in addition to the restriction at the thru hull, it became clear to me that this setup would have difficulty in keeping up with any but the smallest of leaks. No way would it keep up with a missing drain plug, for example, and perhaps not even an on water impeller change.

The Rule website showed that the stock float switch is compatible with the 1500, so all I needed to do was replace the pump, the hose, and the thru hull using 1 1/8" tubing and fittings. Access to the pump required that I remove the Sunsport seating rear bench. Even then access to the pump, the hose, and the thru hull was an exercise in contortion.

I replaced the stock SS capped plastic thru hull fitting with a solid SS Attwood 1 1/8" thru hull, cementing it with 3M 4200, as FW did at the factory.

Ok, so the picture is sideways. It's a round fitting, ok? Anyway, I do think that the stock fitting looked nicer with the rounded SS cap:

Still, I'm happy knowing that there is a wider bore with no additional flow restriction, and that the solid SS fitting will last as long as the boat.

With only a few scratches, cuts, and abrasions, and of course a few choice swear words, I was able to run and affix the bilge hose,

...and install the new pump.

The Rule 500 sure looks like a toy compared to the 1500. End result, I'm using the stock float switch, wiring harness, and manual pump switch at the helm. A change from the stock 5 amp fuse to an 8 amp fuse was required. With my current setup this pump runs off of the existing dual purpose 120AH battery.

I plan to add an Automatic Rule 1500 as back up pump, this coupled with another project to add a second battery will I believe even meet Pascoe's recommendations. One part of the Four Winns stock setup I liked was the hose they used. Much beefier than the Teleflex polyethylene hose I used. The stock hose wasn't marked, but I believe it was series 148 multipurpose reinforced vinyl hose. I'll probably swap out the poly hose I used when I do the second pump.

Well, I finally got around to doing the updates alluded to above.

Here's the series 148 multipurpose reinforced vinyl hose, with redundant SS hose clamps at each end.

Also drilled a hole, and installed a second 1 1/8" Attwood thru hull, and again sealed it with 4200.

The raised area of the bilge meant for screwing down bilge pumps and float switches was getting crowded, so I rigged up a bracket at a level about 1" higher than the primary bilge pump. This way the pump will only kick on when the primary pump can't keep up, and has the added benefit of keeping the pump above any cr@p in the bottom of the bilge that could foul it.

I couldn't find a stainless L bracket, so I gave a regular sheet metal angle iron bracket several coats of enamel, and used SS mounting hardware. Again, I used 4200 on the screws mounting the angle iron to the fiberglass.

Here's the second pump installed.

The main bilge pump runs off the House battery, so I elected to run the back up bilge pump off the starting battery. I figure it's better to have two run down batteries and a floating boat, than to have a boat with a fully charged starting battery on the bottom. I could have wired the pump directly to the battery, with an appropriately sized fuse, but elected to use the Aqualarm Bilge Pump Monitor I got cheap off eBay.

I posted once before that it has great features like a switch, digital counter, audible alarm, visual alarm, and built in fuse, but it's clearly not ignition protected.

So, I fabricated a star board box, and rigged a very temporary install for it in case I don't like it.

I finally splash the boat for the first time this season next weekend, and just for grins I'm going to pull the bilge plug (while the boat is on the lift) and then float it to answer the question, can the main bilge can keep up without help from the back up? Should be interesting.

Thanks for the update and pics Jim. I will be curious to see your results. Even if it does not totally keep up you have certainly bought yourself some valuable time.

Glad your going to test it. I was going to suggest it after all that work. Hopefully that is the only time the second pump will ever need to work.

All this talk is making me happy I bought a boat lift with cover and have a place to park it.

Finally got around to testing them. I pulled the bilge plug and lowered the boat until it was floating. The main bilge pump kicked on, and I was delighted to see the jet of water it kicks out.

The main pump easily handled the water coming in from the missing drain plug. It would kick on for 35 seconds, stop for 15, then kick on for another 35 seconds. I let it run through half a dozen cycles before cranking it back up on the lift (and reinstalling the plug wink ). The back up pump never got wet. If stuff happens, I think I bought myself some time.

This is great Jim_R. Nice job. Looks like I have another project. I need to check to see if I can just upgrade the pump as well. I have another foot of lake fill before I can get on the lift. We had such a cold spring here that we are still waiting for the snow pack to melt. We are at least 2 weeks behind normal. I think 4 more days and we are boating...

Excellent project, in the new small boat i got, i am doing something similer, i am pulling out the stock rule 500gph pump with bilge switch wired to a auto/off/manual switch on the dash, and replacing it with 2 x 1200gph with build in float switches. As the boat is a bowrider, and water may come over the bow, i think this is best option. Also am not using the dash switch for the bilge, have got them wired up to be automatic on their own circuit.. (each has their own float switch, fuse etc)

You know, you're right! I got so caught up in finding out if the main pump could keep up with the missing bilge pump, I lost sight of the end goal. Other than hearing it cycle, I don't know that it works. blush I may have to fill a bucket, remove the pump from it's bracket and test it out. Thanks!
