My 6 year old and I, along with our Dalmatian were cruising down the lake today and I just happened to look at the oil pressure gauge. It was reading 20psi at 3600rpm. Since that is about 1/3 of the pressure it normally runs, I pulled the throttle back to idle, gauge basically goes to zero and warning alarm starts beeping. I immediately cut the ignition and open the hatch. Oil freaking everywhere and I look at the remote oil filter as I've read about these hose connections failing in the past. Sure enough, the hose fitting is why I have at least 3 qts of oil sprayed though out my bilge.

We were about 3/4 of a mile away from the ramp when this happened. It was about 85 degrees outside with zero wind. I paddled for an hour before a guy in a bass boat saw us and towed us in.

Guess I should be glad it happened today close to the ramp instead of yesterday when we were 15 miles down the lake.

Next few weeks are busy for us so I dropped the boat off at a near by marina and they told me the standard 2 weeks. Doesn't look like the line is a big deal to change, but I do not want to deal with mess. I know my boat is 3 years out of warranty, but I might call Volvo tomorrow to complain anyway. What do you guys think?

Looks like my hours to date this year will be stuck on 7 for a while

I'd give Volvo a call. All you've got to lose is a little bit of your time.

I had the same thing happen a few years ago when I had a fourwinns with a 5.7 Gi. My boat was out of warranty but Volvo covered the repair and the clean-up in the bilge. I was told this was a silent recall and quite common for that year. They apparently got a bad bunch of hoses with defective factory crimped fittings.

Lg260- Thanks for your response. I thought I remembered an issue sometime around 2003 for those hose fittings. Did you call Volvo or did your dealer take care of it for you?

My boat is not at the dealer I purchased it from, so I'm not counting on them going out of their way for me. I figured I'd call Volvo myself.

My dealer took care of making the call to Volvo. If you brought the boat to a volvo dealer , they should be familiar with this problem. My dealer had a several boats with this problem. How many hours do you have on you engine?

I'm just over 204. It's at a Volvo dealer and the lady at the desk said she'd never heard of the problem. So I'll probably have to call myself.

I had about 150hrs on mine when it happened. I remember my dealer telling me that they had to replace a big block in a cobalt because of this problem! I would ask to talk to the service manager. The lady at the desk isnt going to be much help.

My boat is a 2003 with the same engine. Is there anything I should check to avoid the same problem? I have 196 hours on it.

troop, I always new the potential for a problem was out there since I have read about it happening on a few message boards. I always looked at the fittings where they attach at the remote filter when I check the oil level. Everything looked normal this morning when I checked things over, only it apparently wasn't.

I guess the only thing you can do is either cross your fingers and hope it doesn't happen or go ahead and replace the oil lines.

I've got an '04 with a 5.7 Gi. I had this happen to me on my '95 Chevy Blazer..put a reman engine in the truck and sold it. I heard they leaked mostly, but occasionally would blow at the crimped fittings. I would definatly give Volvo a call....here's hoping they take care of you smile

This is not an easy issue to find online. Anyone have any links that they know of regarding the leaking oil line? Is there a recall?

I have no idea about links. But if you shoot John Valich a PM he might be able to help you. His boat was the one that VP had to replace an engine in, and that's how they found out they had this widespread problem.

I can't imagine them not warranty-ing it for you RX. It's a known defect for them, and if they didn't actually "recall" them, they have a repair procedure.

Again John Valich knows all about it.

troop, There is no way to tell if it will happen or not. The fittings are factory crimped, so there is no way to tighten them either. The dealer fixed mine by replacing the oil lines with ones that have regular hose clamps(like mercs) on them so they can be tightened if needed

What about adding hose clamps just underneath the existing factory crimp clamps? (If there's room, that is.)

Well got the boat back last week. Volvo refused to replace under warranty and I even had the dealer batting for me, but it is 3 years out of warranty so I can't say I'm surprised. Anyhow, had the dealer clean the bilge, replace the lines etc, and they hit me up for $350. Not the end of the world I guess.

Anyhow, I brought the boat home hooked up my hose to the flush port and it ran fine. Went to the lake on Sunday and all was good idling out of the marina and past the no wake buoy. Hope up on plane and after a few minutes the warning horn is going off. Look down and oil pressure is good, $#(^, water temp is almost 250. Shut down and open hatch. I hear air sucking from the flush connection. Apparently when I tightened it, the plastic connector got crooked and didn't tighten the cap all the way.

So I retightened the cap and restarted. Water temp gradually went back down to 175 and ran fine the rest of the day.

Does anyone think I may have damaged the impeller by letting air get sucked into the cooling system? I never ran it at WOT but at 3-4k rpm it ran normal temp and when I got down to idle the temp would increase a bit, but no more than normal.
