Those of you who winterize yourselves using the "green stuff," what's your process for de-winterizing? Do you attempt to collect & dispose of it? Collect & recycle it?

I'm aware of what should be done with it... I wonder what the members of this board actually do.

I avoid this by using the pink RV stuff and flushing it down the gravel drive.

I recovered and saved mine. But since I switched to dry winterizing two years ago, I have about 4 gallons in jugs sitting in my garage cabinets. Anyone in or around Peoria that doesn't want to spend $9/gal on green stuff, you're welcome to some premixed to -25!

I always use the pink stuff. Why would you use anything other than the pink stuff? It is non-toxic, so you don't have to recover it.

I winterize my boat on the lift, and it stays there all winter. In the spring, I just fire it up. The pink stuff gets pumped out with the water being pumped in.

I collect my engine oil and drive lube in the empty anti-freeze bottles and take it to the place where I take my truck to have the oil changed. If I had any toxic anti-freeze, I would do the same with it.

Are you sure it is ethylene, and not propylene.

Ethylene glycol is listed as a hazardous substance. You may have to track down a local reclamation place.

I've always wondered why Volvo Penta still used EG in the closed cooled engines ???

Here's why I ask: I'm a big chicken.

To be specific, while there are a lot of things I can do on and to a boat, I don't yet have the confidence to winterize the engine myself. Therefore it goes to my dealer, and they use the green stuff exclusively. For the benefit of the engine, or the benefit of knowing you have to bring the boat back in the spring, my guess is it's a little of both. I just want to know who to blame if it's done wrong wink .

I'd do the pink stuff too if I was ready to risk an $8K engine. Maybe this fall one of you guys can put up a youtube on winterizing smile . I've read all the posts and all the manuals, I want to SEE someone do it.

Drive to Peoria, watch 2Suns do his and about 5 boats from his boat club! Then drive the 5 miles to my house and watch and help me do it, without leaving any antifreeze in it at all! That'll really blow your mind!

i'm with 230 mike on this one but for a different reason. although i know how to winterize my engines and do it myself, i just like watching other people work.

I'm not a fan of any anti-freeze, even the pink stuff. While it's beter if you drink it, the pink stuff (propylene glycol) is no better for the environment than the green stuff (ethylene glycol). It's been about ten years now since the FTC sued one of the makers of one of the brands claiming environmental benefits and made them stop.

I prefer draining my engine. If you are too wimpy to trust your ability to properly get the water out, you really are better off watching someone else do the job right.

I would not use the green stuff (ethylene glycol) to winterize a boat, there is really no reason to not use the less toxic stuff. I use the -100 stuff for the corrosion resistance and there is really not much corrosion in the intake manifold and thermo housing (the parts I can actually see!) considering salt water use. If you want to use AF and not let it run on the ground, you can put the drain plug in, turn off the battery so the auto bilge switch does not go on, and drain it in the bilge. Then put a drain pan under the drain plug and drain the AF from the bilge into the drain pan. Dispose of it as you usually would.
When I winterize I drain all points manually and then backfill with -100 low tox AF.

Mike it's really not hard, but you have to with your comfort zone. I just followed the owners manual that came with my OMC and did not listen to well meaning neighbors advising the suck the AF up the drive method. Never had a problem and have been doing it this way for 6 years.
Then in the spring I do my spring tune up, lube up the gimble, ujoints, and driveshaft, put the drive back on and that's it.
If I ever get an outboard, what will I do with all the spare time I will then have???
