Can this be greased at all? Seems like mine likes to stick and there is a HUGE "thump" when you pull away from a stop.

Thanks thumb

The HUGE thump usually indicates the brakes need to be adjusted. Depending on your coupler, you may see some sliding areas that you can lube. Lots of good Trailer Tech info here:

Are trailer brakes, specifically drum type, self adjusting?

Mine Are Not. I need to adjust mine before the next highway trip as I noticed they were banging the other day.....[note to self]

My first trailer had the big thump, my current one does not. It is the slack coming out of the coupler that makes the noise, don't think it hurts anything. If you have someone drive the car while you stand near enough to see the coupler move, you will hear it happen.

No drum brakes (trailer) are not self adjusting like on a car. You need to rotate the the star nut(inside the drum assy) to adjust. Their is an oval slot at the bottom of the backing plates. If you are lucky you can get a brake adjusting tool or a large screwdriver in the slot. If not it is a real pain, take the drum off, adjust, put the drum back on to test, repeat......

I personally would rather have a little thump than brakes that drag and heat up.

There is a little shock absorber looking thing in most actuators, it is a dampner. they go bad, hitches go bang, the world goes round.
Doggg, it sounds like you may need to just replace that actuator.
