Volvo created the next generation of the inboard drive with its IPS series. It takes an inboard into a new category of power such that the name of the IPS series model number is a better indicator of the cruising and top speeds of a unit than the engine’s Hp rating. Perhaps everyone knows that by now.

Soon to be on Volvo’s website is a gas engine mated to the drive. It’s in some boats now, but not yet on their website as this is being written. I have been told the model name will be something like the IPS 500.

I drove one and really liked it. What was my problem with the gas engine mated to the next generation inboard drive? It made the big express cruiser that I handled feel like a big runabout rather than a slower cruiser. I had to keep my hand from nailing the throttles—it was too much fun!

Is this for single engine applications? Does the exhaust come out the back of the fin?

Those are some gnarly big exhaust hoses! I'm a bit surprised they dont use a tube with some flex couplings instead.

I just thought about it some more.... Does the exhaust elbow at the drive turn when the drive is turned? That might be the reason for the flexible coupling???

One of the key design criteria was safety at sea.

One of the safe features is the unit can shear off if need be and the hull/boat will not be holed. Much of what one sees shows their design solution to this issue.

In a older, standard style inboard, both the rudder and the prop shaft can (and often will) create holes to let water in when they are damaged.

Thus, this design pulls ahead on this aspect.

In reality, Naw. It was about a 16,000 to 18,000 thousand cruiser and the Camper canvas was up.

In excitment level,... as in did my heart react with a thump, thump, thumping, because I was experiencing something that was way over what I was expecting and was prepared for, Yes!

Did I have a grin on my face like a 10 year old does after getting a new thrill, yes.

I don't get it. The cruising and top speeds depends on the the boats size, weight, etc. How can put a general number on the engine?

Ask them, not me, but perhaps it makes sense, when one powers a cruiser with IPS 500 and gets 500 Hp per engine type old style inboard speeds, rather than matching up with the actual Hp rating type speeds, if the same boat was using the old style inboard set-up. I take it as a way to say that a boat goes faster with the new inboard than with the old inboard when using the same engine in both cases.

I beleive what he means is they look at the same boat equipped with inboard power and compare it to the IPS. If a boat was running twin 500hp engines, the IPS system to provide comparable performance would be labelled the IPS500. But in actuality, the IPS's hp rating might only be 400.

EDIT: Wasn't quick enough.

Yes, something like that.

Say a cruiser with twin 500 Hp engines and the old inboard style drives went 45 mph at WOT.

Then the same cruiser with twin new inboard style drives went 45 mph at WOT.

Would the boat buyer be better educated by calling the new style inboard drives "500" as a model name or by there crankshaft SAE type Hp?
