I want to change to bunks instead of rollers...Darn rollers keep damaging my gel coat. even after I moved them to the thicker parts of the hull (ribs?). Funds are low so I'd have to do it myself. Anyone done it? Are their kits with the hardware?
Thanks
Mike

Mike,

Contact your trailer builder, chances are they built a bunk version of your trailer and my be able to supply the parts for it.

I would look for a deal on a used trailer and then resell yours. Probally be alot cheaper in the long run.

when we bought our Sun Runner, it was sitting on trailer built for a Chap, and didn't fit at all. Took it to the Metalcraft trailer place and they rebunked it for $600. They had to cut off and replace all the mounts too. Looked like new when it was done.

What type of bunk is better? Carpet over wood or plastic over wood? When wet plastic should slide better?

The vast majority of bunks I see are carpeted. Personally, I think it's easier on the gelcoat than plastic would be...

I spray silicon on my carpet a couple times a season. Boat slides on and off a lot easier. The jet ski practially slides off on level land so be careful where you unhook the boat from the trailer.

Anyone ever use those silicon pads you put on the bunks?

I was thinking the same thing until recently. My new boat lift came with plastic covered. I ask the company why and they said the carpet can accumulate dirt where plastic can't. Made sense.

If you are in Long Island NY I'd think twice about switching to a bunk trailer. The tides on the North Shore change the water depth by close to 7 feet every 6 hours so if you had to load the boat at low tide on a shallow ramp you'd have a harder time with a bunk than roller trailer. Here on the North Shore I see almost all rollers for this reason. If you launch from the South Shore the water depth change is much less with the tidal changes. If you have a steep ramp and you can choose to load/unload at high tide the bunk may be OK.
I'd instead change the rollers to the non-marking ones and make sure the rollers are not hitting any of the strakes.
